Ok guys here goes. Sometime back I posted on my charging problem on the 1994 90 merc. Today while getting a part at the merc. dealer i inquired about a voltage reg for it. Gave him the serial number and his response was i do not have a regulator only a rectifier. I told him i could not argue but based on the engine schematics i viewed on the web I did have a regulator. The shop owner chimed in and said No You Don't! Came home and removed the part I thought was the regulator. Googled the part number and sure enough it is a regulator 815279-?. Also notice under and behind my starter solenoid a gadget with 3 studs on it, two wires to a stud. Googled this and it came up a rectifier.
So, I assume my engine has both and so called expert locally once again has no clue! I noticed that the regulator was leaking some substance and has a burn inside the size of a quarter. I believe without a doubt this is the problem with my charging system. Question is do I need to troubleshoot any other components before installing the new regulator or does this sound like a normal failure?
