Hi Folks,

Following is part of an e-mail I received from a co-worker regarding his first grandchild. He has allowed me to share it with you all and to request prayers on behalf of the family.

* Katelyn Ann was born on Sunday 10/10/04 @ 10:06 am.

* 7 pounds 3 ounces, 20 1/2 inches long

* During birth the heart monitor indicated she was in distress as her heart rate dropped dangerously.

* The decision was made to do an emergency C Section and get her quickly.

* Somewhere during the process she aspirated zirconium (sp?) into her lungs as she attemped to breath before she was actually born. This has the impact of locking up one's lung cells and inhibiting normal respiration.

* The staff at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington NC rushed her to their neo-natal center and began immediate treatments to clear her lungs.

* They realized it was extremely serious and had her MediVacced by air to Duke University Medical Center in Durham. At Duke they put her on a special treatment of oxygen and nitrous oxide (sp?) to get her body to absorb the toxin and clear the way for normal breathing.

* She did not respond well to this. The decision was made in the wee hours of Tuesday morning to do an emergency bypass surgery that essentially filters her blood for her and allows the lungs time to heal on their own.

* It's been more than 24 hours and so far she appears to be doing well. She's got a long road ahead of her...but we are hopeful.

* That's all I know right now. I'm sure my grasp of the details is shaky, but this is what essentially occured.

Stephanie and Bryan are at Ronald McDonald House near the hospital, real close to her. They've got a wonderful medical team and a strong support system around them.

The latest today is that Katelyn is still holding her own, Mom and Dad are able to have limited physical contact with their daughter.

I would appreciate prayers for the faimly and the medical staff surrounding Katelyn.

Thanks,

Sue D.
