Port Livewell leaks

My port livewell valve does not shut off completely so the livewell leaks when the valve is closed. The valve switch works fine. I took the switch off and I cannot make any adjustments to make the valve close completely. I have a Targa 1900 ('99 model). I believe the cables lead to the back of the boat - that means the batteries, oil resevoir tank, and platform have to be removed. I know I can save money by doing it myself, but is it something that a simpleton like myself can do??
