Well, i got the new rig, and it is INCREDIBLE... The merc manual for the 200 opti recommends 1 hour of 3000-4500 RPM and varying speed every two minutes, then next 3 hours of varying speed every ten minutes... i am planning to follow their recommendations unless ya'll tell me I'm crazy - so now is your chance to tell me!

I would follow it to the tee. With it being a new motor and the equipment they have now, the dealer connects it up to the computer and it determines if the procedure was followed.

Break it in right and as per the manufacturers requirements. It is the difference between a motor that will run strong for years or one that is problematic (IMHO).

Yep...break her in just like my name says...to the TEE!

Some run a little extra oil in the second tank and don't think it'll hurt...if anything it will help the rings seat better. After the break-in...you can run it anyway you want...but, varying the speed only helps.

Like Buzz said, with the optis, the tech can know plug that bad boy in and tell if you broke it in properly. They can tell how many times you redlined and for how long etc. Follow the procedure, it's there for a reason, plus you don't want to void your warranty. I know merc stands behind their products, but no need to take any chances.

Now don't come back until it's broke in! See you tomorrow! LOL

DON'T run extra oil... the computer doubles the oil for the first 10 hours. It's actually for 10 hours of running over 2000 or 2500 RPMs, I forget. My "break-in" for my new powerhead is over, but it's still double-oiling because of the 10 hour thing and the rpms.

Deffinetely DON'T add oil to the gas,....as Mike said, the Opti's ECM will control all the oiling during break-in and normal conditions......just follow your manuals directions and be sure to vary the throttle! My 225Opti has a slightly different procedure,...I only have to run between 3000-5000 RPM's for 2hrs....and the motor's computer won't even let me run over 5000 RPM's even if i hammer it!! I'm past the break-in period now and she's running at 5450RPM's

right now,...it'll get a little faster each time I use it!

I'm glad to be past the the double oiling stage and the break-in period.....can't wait to be able to really open it up under ideal conditions.....haven't had that yet!!

This '03 Opti is AWESOME though,.....they really got that badboy right!! Field warranty claims are down 85% overall over the past 2 years.....feedback so far from the Pro's who are running the '03 Opti's is as we like to say,.."Awesome!"....they are performing beautifully!! GREAT job Mercury,...(also..excellent job on the '03 MG's too,...my TR82FB is the best one I've ever had!! Excellent!!)

At that little tourney we had last week. My partner and I were sitting side by side in our NITROS with 225 efi's and a group of the "other" boats (ahem..a couple of Rangers) came by and Teddy said..."Here come the bumblebees". And he was right. The opti's sound so much different than the efi's. They actually buzz (no offence Buzz). All were 225's. The efi's growl and howl!!

Oops ....my bad! I didn't realize it was an opti...DISREGARD MY PREVIOUS POST!

EFI owners Growl and Howl at the gas pumps too!!..LOL

You need an Opti Tox,.....with as much as you spend on gas guiding every year,......you can cut your gas expense in 1/2 on the boat by running one....I love'em!!! (Despite the buzzing sound...LOL)

Let um get all the bugs out Mac and I'll consider it on my next rig. More bells and whistles means more to break!! 1 repair (not in warranty) can eat the gas and oil savings right up. Plus there's the up-front cost. I'm not against them in any way, just waitin for the right time!!

Well,..now that you're on the State Team, you'll be getting new boats every 2yrs anyway (if not yearly), so you'll never be OUT of warranty on an Opti,..they come with 5 year warranties anyway,.....better than the EFI's warranty!!

The bugs have been zapped.....the '03's are the best ones they've EVER built!! They're performing very well on the tours right now.....warranty claims are down 85%...you NEED an Opti!!

Mac

You're right. I'm still on the bubble with the State Team deal...It's supposed to be a slam dunk but the sponsor dealer is doing some funny stuff...Long story involving my partner going to the National Team...If they don't get their stuff together I may be contacting Ranger, Skeeter or Triton!! I can't wait forever. I need to turn my boat and get moving.
