I've had my new 640LX/90Hp rig out about 12-14 times now and

one thing I've noticed is that a small amount of oil/fuel

will collect in the splashwell (its white and easy to see

dirt). Everything runs fine and when I pull the motor cover

I can't see anything leaking, I just see some oil at

the bottom of the cowling. I've already been through

2 gallons of oil, and I don't remember every spilling any

when filling the internal oil tank. Is this normal to have this collect like this? If not of course this is happening now because the fishing on the river is really heating up!

I will need to take the boat in for the 20hour service

(Tim at BPS said about 20hours), but I was going to wait

until the beginning of summer to take it in.

Bill,

I have the lx700 w/115hp and see some of the same with my rig. not a lot of oil but just a bit every now and then. I think it may be coming from when the motor is tilted up, the oil/gas that is left in the carbs I think comes out. Might check with the dealer just to be sure. hope this helps.

Bill - I had what sounds like a similar question last year. I had Tracker check my Merc and they said the same thing that James D. did, just extra from the Carbs! But have the dealer check too, just in case.

Bill-

There has been quite a few posts here relative to this same topic...many even with the same motor! I have a 2001 90hp Merc and see the same problem...The consensus from many smarter than me here is that some of the unburned oil/fuel mixture leaks out from the carburators (more so if you tilt the motor up for storage after running it)...the fuel evaporates leaving the messy oil behind...In my specific case, I know the problem was worse when the motor was new...This is most likely due to the double-oil used during the break-in period. So, keep an eye on it...If it gets excessive, get it checked out, but don't get too worried if you just have a few drops now and again...

My 90 doesn't leak a drop or leave any oil even when tilted up for long periods....I'd look real hard to find it.

OK everyone, check you primer ball. I also had oil in the splash well. After looking closely at the gas primer ball I noticed it was connected to the hose with zip ties. I could spin the bulb inside the hose. I cut off the zip ties, trimmed back the hose a little and reassembled everything with hose clamps. I'm sure this is also why my primer ball never got as hard as I expected it to.

I would venture to guess that this is more likely than gas leaking out of the cowling from over flowing carbs. In that case you would find oil on the inside of the cowl.

Good point on the zip ties...

I can't remember if that's what mine has or not...

I think it did initially, but when I had to remove the ball (because it was installed backwards) I think I replaced them with hose clamps...

Thank you Marke ....now that you say that...that was the very first thing I replaced when I recieved my boat. I don't like ANYTHING connected with tie wraps. Replaced them with hose clamps...
