BRANSON, MISSOURI - September 2, 2003
Branson, Mo., has distinguished itself as home to some of the best bass fishing in the state. Boasting over 800 miles of shoreline, Table Rock Lake hosts thousands of anglers, from the casual weekender to those who fish organized national tournaments. On Monday, September 15, Branson and Table Rock Lake will host a unique group of anglers.
Forty-three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients will board guided fishing boats and depart the Chateau on the Lake Marina for a day of bass fishing and camaraderie. Each recipient will be paired with a member of the Branson B.A.S.S. Club or with one of the guest pros as his partner for the tournament. This outing, sponsored by the Branson B.A.S.S. Club and the Jim Stafford Theatre, is part of a four-day convention hosted by Radisson Hotel Branson and the Branson Veterans Task Force.
"This tournament is an experience of a lifetime for each of our club members," commented Tate Womack, Branson B.A.S.S. Club member and tournament director. "To spend the day on the lake with one of these extraordinary heroes is an incredible opportunity and we look forward to sharing the beauty of the Ozarks with them."
Trophies to the top 10 places will be presented by nationally-renowned entertainer Jim Stafford at the awards dinner that evening at the Radisson Hotel Branson . "Our goal is to give these men a wonderful day on the lake. After what they've done and continue to do for our country, they deserve to be treated to all the fun Branson has to offer," said Stafford. Stafford performs in his own theatre nightly and lives on Table Rock Lake.
Branson B.A.S.S. Club members participating in the tournament include Jim Bruffey, Harold Bryeans, Jerry Causey, Guy Frahm, Eddie Gross, Gerald McDaniel, Kory Mitchell, Gary Nicklaus, Jeff Pascoe, Mike Radney, Max Ray, Dan Stibich, Bob Welch and Tate Womack.
Other invited fishing guides and pros participating include: Kevin Bowling, Charlie Davis, Pat Dial, Mike Eby, Wes Endicott, Lefty Evans, Bud Fisher, Charlie Fisher, Shawn Hanna, Larry Herndon, David Hudson, Tim Hughes, Stacy King, Johnny Lee, Gary Marshall, Ken Michaud, Charlie Campbell, T.D. Russell, Lane Schumaker, Dr. Larry Segar, Jim Smith, Jerry Snyder, Greg Wood and Pee Wee Youngblood.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military award for valor in action by men and women in the armed forces. It is given for actions that are 'above and beyond' the call of duty in combat against an armed enemy. Awarded by Congress and presented by the President, the first Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded on March 25, 1863. Since the Civil War, there have been only 3,419 recipients of this honor, and 136 are still living.
