Mercury pulled the plug on carb & EFI motors today. RIP EFI engines.

Mercury did not wait until 2006. Faxes went out to the dealers today. Production is stopping on the EFI & carb engines. From now own it looks like 4 stroke, Opti or Verado if you like black.

Sorry, haven't seen that fax yet. We're still getting carbed and efi motors from Merc.

Best motors they ever built..EfI Is the best I have an opti,But the old carbed were the greatest....Jr

I echo Jr's comments, the 2 stroke classics are great motors. Guess the price of Nitro's for sure will be going up now..

The carb motors sure are great. Mine starts no problem every time, its all in the procedure.

Jim,

My 115 starts no problem at the dock, but sometimes when out on the water after fishing for a while, its a bit rough to start, it will turn over but when I put it in forward or reverse it cuts off. Someone told me I have it trimmed up or down too much.. any advice??

The carbed engines will be on the lakes for years to come. They will only die out when the parts and the men that know how to repair them are gone.

Brian, Mine was doing the same thing a few months ago. Took it to outhouse marine for the annual maintenance and told them what it was doing. They called and said I had a bad switchbox. Hope something else is wrong with yours because it cost about $500.00 to replace. It fixed the problem though. Robert

The good ol' onward march of technology... I have an Opti, and still, I can guarantee this is good news. In 10 years, we'll all be trying to decide what 4-stroke to strap on the back of our rigs. The downside, "How often do I change the oil on this thing?"

Verado anyone?

Craig,...the only one's available now are are already built and in the "system"....production has been halted.

I agree...I got that carbed 90 down pat now. First time every time:)

Nominal,

thanks for the info, my 115 is a 2004, and I have a 3 year warranty , hopefully it will be covered if this is the problem. Funny thing is 2 other carb motors I have had in the past did the same thing, so I am thinking it is operator error. ( one was a 150 Yamaha VMAX carb model, the other a 60 Merc elpto. )

BTW, once I get it re-started it run fine at all rpms, even at neutral..

Brian, i always trim mine to be level when i start it and its never a problem thru the day. i also let it idle for like 20 seconds before i put it in gear.

Jim,

Thanks for the advice, that is most likely my problem, I will try that next time on the water. Other than that the 115 elpto has been a great motor. I wonder if Merc is gonna stop making all 2 strokes or just the v6's. I read somewhere this only effected the larger motors. Yamaha has a great line of 2 strokes also the c70 and c90 HP 2 strokes are very commen on flats boats as they are very lightwieght an push those boats great.

Brian:

I am surprized that Mercury is giving up the technology of the 2 cycle oil burners. I spoke to Johnson/Evinrude and they are still making carbed to 2-cycles because they sell them in other countries. I guess Mercury has such a large market in the US they can stop the old technology go with the new and continue to make big bucks right here in the US.

I'm sure Mercury will honor their warranties and there will be parts available for a long time.
