This boat will become too small real fast,I upgraded from a 12' jon boat to a LX700 ,115 Merc.At first the boat scared me but within one year it was too small as I branched out to fish larger lakes.I once again upgraded to a NX882 DC,175 Optimax. After two years I wish I had waited fot the 929.Only problem is I would need a new tow vehicle also and cant aford both.Boats are never big enough or fast enough or maybe its just me <"((((<<:p

Mike,

I live and fish near Lake Hopatcong, I assume a 640LX is 16' ?

Not sure if it's to small or not, but there are some BIG boats on Hopatcong and could get very rough, I owned a 2004 ProTeam 185 with a 60hp. The 185 is 18.5' long. Actually my maiden voyage was in Greenwood lake. When Hopatcong was empty the boat was good, but on a busy day, I felt like the 185 with the 60hp was too small for the lake, same for Greenwood.

I know someone selling a 19' 1989 Gambler with a 150 hp in South East PA, if your interested let me know, I could put you in touch with this person.

Oh Mike, it also depends on what you plan on doing with the boat, is it for tourneys or just fun fishing? Do you plan on going to bigger lakes than Hopatcong or Greenwood?

Not to hijack this thread, but you may want to take a look at my boat for sale.

Mike,

I own a 640lx and I love this boat! It is a little small but not that bad,I fish tournaments (11 a year)and have had it on big lakes(winnipesaukee in NH) it all depends on how you handle it on those rough waters,(just take it easy) Mine has a 90 hp merc and does about 5o mph with full load and 2 guys, I would suggest getting a whales tale if it doesnt have one (better to get on plane) I think it is a great transition from the boat you are in,and think if you can get a decent deal on it go for it! I am pleased with mine so if you have any questions let me know i would be glad to help as everyone here helped me out three years ago when i bought mine. Good luck :D

Sounds like a good move to me. After all if it turns out in a couple years you want something bigger you shouldn't be in a hole or anything. I stair stepped up through several boats as my needs changed over the years and don't regret any of the boats in the past. I might have saved some money if i knew that I would need a 19' some day but I feel I got some good experience and learned from each boat I owned.

I haven't never took a bad beating trading through the years unlike cars, boats seem a little easier to trade or sell straight out. Clark

I use to have a 640lx. I thought is was a great boat for our smaller lakes here in Kansas. It was very stable and fished well. If you use common sense it will serve you well. I had the Tracker 75hp and it ran mid 40's( I use to think that was fast enough). I would have to agree with massbassman, once you have a taste of speed you want to go faster and bigger(I have a 901 now). You just have to decide what will work for you, you can always step up someday. Good luck, Chris F.

I have a 04' 640LX with 05' 75hp Opti with a 20" Laser II. I did a similar upgrade. I went from a 69' Whaler sport (13-8) with a 74 Merc 500 that I re-enforced the transom, (only rated for 40hp), put a raised deck,24 gal livewell, 14 gallon gas tank under the deck, trolling motor etc. This was my beater bass boat for 10 years. I wanted something newer and nicer and the 640LX fit my budget and garage. For as small as it is - it fishes 2 people well, it's dry in most average water, and hauls ass for a tiny entry level bass rig. Mine runs a consistant 46-47mph GPS @ 5700-5800rpm with about a 3-4 second hole shot. It had a few set-up issues that took some time to dial in but I love it for now.
