All,

I have decided to upgrade from a 25hp to either a 50 or 60hp on my ProAngler 16. Here are my questions for the board:

Do dealers take trades on motors? Or do you think I should sell it outright?

When I mount the new motor, I would like to also permanently mount a 9.9 kicker beside it. How much would the extra weight/drag affect speed?

Thanks!

You will be hundreds of dollars ahead to sell the motor yourself.

If you do trade it, remember..... The dealer may put some time in the old motor to clean it up and check it out. He will likely have to offer some sort of warranty with it if there isn't one still in effect from the factory. He may incur cost of his money if he doesn't sell it immediately, it could take a while to sell and he won't know in advance. And, given all this, he still has to make a profit.

See you at the Rally!

Rich, often times, it's better to trade in the whole rig towards one with a 50 or 60 on it already vs just the motors. Just my .02, but you are better to sell it outright if that's the route you want to take. And extra 10 HP back there on top of the extra ponies you're adding will be a lot more weight. You shouldn't need a kicker. Just get a trolling plate for the main motor and you should be fine. A 50 HP will troll right down, especially with a plate on it. If you need to slow down more, drag two 5 gallong buckets off each transom cleat and you'll be down to 1 mph. That's what I used to do with my Superguide. But what you should REALLY do, is trade that beer can in for a glass boat. Start small, like a 640 or 700 lx to get started, until you're used to the big leagues! LOL

Rich - On trolling with a 50-60, I can tell you trolling most of the day yesterday with my 40 on the 175 was no problem, she GPS's at just 2.5mph idling in gear. I did have to tinker with the idle setting last year to get it just right, but I would think the 50-60 should be able to idle down just as easy. Now your hull weighs about 44lbs less them my 175 but with gear and all we're darn near the same weight (your Pro Angler has more storage then my 175). I'd say try trolling with the new motor (if you get one) before investing in the 9.9. UNLESS it's because you want to fish 9.9 restricted lakes, then you know the answer - get the 9.9!

Thanks for all the responses.

I talked the wife into the new motor, she won't go for a new boat! I already have a 9.9, it was my father's old motor and just needs a few minor touch ups. It isn't for trolling, it is for the horsepower restricted lakes here in PA. Right now I mount an 8 hp tiller when I go to those lakes, but it is a bit of a pain and the 9.9. is set up for console steering.

Rob, why would I go slumming into glass? The next boat is the Tundra! Tin is in!
