Wasn't happy about it but had accepted the fact that I was going to have to fork over a few hundred $'s for new brake rotors but today the BIG one hits. Torque converter I think. Won't shift out of 1st without a struggle once on the freeway, it wouldn't go into OD and when it did it was very slow to shift. I'm afraid this is going to sting a little.

Hey Sooner if under 100,000 it's under warranty by federal law.

The dealer will not tell you that unless you ask.

Sorry to hear that, Harpo.

Bruce - Really? You mean just the tranny?

I wish. It's got 109,000. I had an extended warranty to 100k that ran out in Jan. I guess the good news is I got a great tax return for the last two years because the woman who did the payroll at my last job was a moron. That was going to go for a new fence and some other things around the house. At least I won't have to put it on the credit card.

I think I'll see how much more it will cost to add a tranny cooler while it's in the shop.

Not transmissions, emmision parts. From his discription I thought it was the converter in the exhaust? I read the symptoms, Remember the rotor thread about the Dakota and jumped to a conclusion. Check engine light should be on. After haveing it scanned whom ever does your repairs will know better. Trans? Trans computer? Modules? Relays heck even a blown fuse or NON working Speedo will cause that??

BF

Chrylser/Dodge trans go into limp mode when the have an error (2nd gear) they will not shift but at least they don't leave you on the side of the road..

It's definatly the tranny. I had trouble with it early on, at about 25k or 30k, relay or module I think. I was in warranty then. The mechanic at the dealership then told me that the transmissions in the Jeep are completly differant than the Chrysler transmission. My six cylinder Jeep has the old Jeep tranny from years ago. I thought it was bullet proof but I do tow a lot with it and I don't have a transmission cooler. Something I want to add if they have to go into this one.

I thought it was the torque converter simply because I called my regular mechanic and told him about it and that's what he said. His shop doesn't do auto trans work though so I'll take it to the tranny shop next door to him. He's a good guy. He worked on my GMC one time. I thought the trans was shot on it and was ready to fork over $1000 but it was just a solenoid and ended up costing around $250. Let's hope something similar is the case here.

Harpo, for whatever it's worth, neither of my Cherokee's had transmission coolers. Combined, I am well over 400,000 miles on the two; towed both the Nitro 180 and 2000DC. Never a lick of trouble with either transmission - and I almost always tow in OD. The only time I don't is when I start to experience "hunting" because of the terrain I may be in.
