My Merc 115 4-Stroke is on a 2001 Nitro 188 Sport. I had a performance issue this season. The max speed of the boat had typically pushed 43 mph by the speedometer. The max speed decreased to around 38 mph and an interesting behavior would happen. Once the boat planed out and reached 38 mph at max throttle it slowly decreased to around 32 mph. This was in optimal conditions. Given any chop and another couple of people in the boat it barely stayed on plane.
I spoke with Bob Bourget at USA Marine and we eliminated some obvious potential causes by trying Sea Foam and higher octane gas, then tried running on an alternate fuel tank and the behavior persisted. I left the boat with Bob and it turned out that the fuel injectors were not balanced and some were clogged. He had the fuel injectors sent out to be retuned and balanced. The result is the motor now performs better than ever! The new max speed is pushing 46 MPH and it used to be 43 MPH.
Life is good again and I'm no longer depressed!
Thanks Bob!
