Bad news...

Oldest has been in the Delayed Entry Program for about a year...he was ready to ship out to San Diego for basic training in September...

Well, last weekend, while at a monthly Marine function, he broke his wrist. The specialist that saw him says he needs a 'pin' to correct the break. Marines say if you have any 'installed hardware' you can't get in...

He's REALLY bummed...he had never been so excited about anything prior to this...He's scheduled for surgery next Tuesday...we're trying to get a second opinion prior to that. We obviously want to do what's best for him...

What now? It's too late to make arrangements for 'out-of-town' college, and he can't work his construction job any more this summer...

The Marines are not taking any responsibility for the injury, even though it happened at one of their camps. In their defense, he did not tell them that he was injured while he was still at camp. He knew it was hurt, but did not want to say anything (already had the Marine mind-set?). We did not know it was broke until the day after he got back home...

Not sure what to do now...

Will wait on the doctor's decision first.

Sorry to hear that Andy. I know it must be a letdown for your son. I'd definitely go for the second opinion and explain the need not to have any "installed hardware". There may be another way to repair it. Good luck, Hutch

ANDY Z Sorry to here that . I know there were some issues that if kknown may have kept my boys out .They were in denial though, and so far does not seem to be a factor.I'm sure Carlos will chime in when he see's the post .since he's still active he will know more.

Good luck to you and your son.

Funny how time changes things... I entered with three screws in my left hip... Dr. asked if I had any trouble... he asked what it was from/for... Told him the original Dr. gave me the choice of take them out or leave them in... I left them in... Marines were fine with that... 1967... Must have been a little closer to the bottom of the barrel... Medically... minimum standard was "warm" and "semi-mobile".

Now, my experience is that they might pin it and then remove the pin... see a real good sports ortho guy... get a reference from your closest big college football program... Then see if they can pin it and then remove the pin...

Andy,

There are waiver for most everything. He just needs to let his desires be know. I am unsure on the poolee injury. But I will be sure to ask when I get back to work. I am going to be out of town (again) to 29 palms for the next two weeks. If you can, email me at work, ok?

In closing, I am sorry to hear he was hurt. Bad deal, and with being young, wanting to "suck it up" and to continue to train...that is such a Marine thing to do.

I will try and get you an answer here soonest.

Carlos
