As you have surely noticed, I am in the market for a new reel. I noticed that the Quantum reels feature a magnetic bail spring. It seems like a good idea. Has anyone noticed that it is too light and turns over? Does the traditional spring found on all others wear out or is this just a gimick? I have never had any troble, but I am all about a improvemnt if it's for real....

i have a friend who baught one last year, while the magnetic bail is neat its not worth it. From what he tells me the rest of the reel could be of better quality and its not worth what it cost. I can also see the magnets wearing out over time, they dont last forever. He regrets not buying a Shimano Stradic or a Diawa Capricorn for similar money.

I've done a lot of fishing in 54 years; most of it with spinning gear..... I only remember one bail spring ever giving out on me. That was on a Diawa ultra-lite maybe 25 years ago..... I wouldn't worry about it!

BTW, Wookie, I've done a couple of reel surveys here on the baord in the last few years..... As you can see from the results, we all tend to prefer Shimano.

Now, my spinning gear is all Shimano Sahara's and my baitcasters are all Shimano Curado's for artificials and Abu's for baitfishing.....

Best advice I think I can give you is to buy the best quality reel you can afford (maybe a bit over) and then standardize on it. Your casting and feel for what's going on will improve dramatically when the equipment has the same feel in your hand as you switch from combination to combination. AND you will get better life out of your equipment!
