I hooked up a little boy named "Shawn" in Springfield,...he had some brain surgery recently and he looked to be 5-6yrs old MAX!!....He liked to go cat-fishing with his Dad and the two of them asked me if I'd draw a catfish on one of his Spring Classic t-shirts that he wanted to buy. I told Shawn I'd be honored to do that for him but "only if he sat on my knee and watched!!".....his eye's got as big as golfballs and he came around behind my table and climbed up on my knee,....I told him to hold on to the table so he didn't fall backwards. I drew a cool looking catfish and put some rocks and weeds and made it look as nice as possible on a "grey shirt".....then I had the catfish saying,..."Catch me if you can,....'cause Shawn's the MAN!"

LOL....you should've seen his and his Dad's face,..they loved it!! He came back later that afternoon and the whole shirt was covered with autographs and he wanted to show me!!

Then the 2 of them came back later and had me draw on a couple more shirts....he was a special little kid who deserved all the attention in the world and he got it!! I saw several of the pro's and reps getting down on one knee to talk to him while they signed his shirt....he'll NEVER forget that day....and neither will I! The 10mins I gave him was nothing,...but the smile he gave me in return made my whole weekend!!....Shawn is the MAN!! Fish-on little buddy!

I'm glad that our sport has representatives like you. You helped make a big difference for Shawn. I have found that most of the top bass fishing pros and pro staffers are really down home people and are usually approachable unlike some of the overpaid, uneducated super athletes of the NFL and NBA. I can't remember that last time a top bass fishing pro was caught with his pants down in a hotel doing lines with a crack hoe! Anyways, I'm just glad that my kids and I have had the opportunity to meet some of the fine people in the sport of bass fishing.

Thanks Bob,...but I'm just one of MANY people who do the same thing every day....I just had an opportunity to share a mutual passion with a little kid who will some day do the same thing for someone else. Our sport has a ton of people like that,....we tend to flock together!!..LOL I feel truely blessed to be able to do what I do and I get tremendous satisfaction from being able to "pass it on!" Like "Shoestring" DuBois always says,..."Fishing is a God given right,...share it with a Friend!" (He has me put that on several BPS hats every time he see's me and he gives those hats away to family and friends...last year he gave one of them to Johnny Morris. I was up in Hemmingway's eating lunch with Zell Rowland and Johnny came walking up to our table to thank me for the hat!!!...I just about went into cardiac arrest!! People were looking and pointing and there's Zell and I talking to Johnny at our table....I was floored by that one!!)...after he left Zell looks at me and in his Texas drawl he says,.."Ya'll the man, foshuure!"....ahahahahah.....never in a 100 years was I expecting THAT!!!...Shoestring told him I did the hat for him and that I was up there eating lunch...so he came up to thank me for the hat!!...Johnny's the MAN..not me!!!!

Really a very nice story. The times that I've been involved with children, whether those with special problems, or just the scouts (who have their own set of obstacles!), have been the greatest.



Too bad all of us can't remember this, when we have to deal with other adults!

Sam,...the reason I'm not on Merc's site is MY fault!!..LOL

I haven't sent them the link to my website yet...it's on my "to do" list,..hopefully this week!! I got a letter from them over the weekend asking all of their Pro's to send updated info and links....i'll send mine in ASAP!! (my webmaster is waiting for me to get him some updated info too...but as you know, I've been traveling....so now it's time to play catch-up!!) Thanks again for the kudo's!!

Rick...When Shawn came up to me and I saw the size of the scar on his head,..i knew he had already endured more in his 1st 6 yrs of age, than I hope I ever have to in a LIFETIME!!!...I would've done ANYTHING to make him smile...and he left my table grinning from ear to ear!!
