Just heading out to the driveway to change the oil in my lower unit and realized that I forgot to pickup some new fiber washers for the plug screws. Is it absolutly necessary to change those every time??

Harpo,

You do not "have to" change them every time. BUT, it is better to wait until you have the washers. You do nto want to reuse one and have it mess up when installing it, or it is deformed and allow a .02 cent washer destroy a 2k lower unit.

Better to wait IMHO

A simple solution is take one plug by an autoparts store and get a supply of rubber O-rings. Thy seem to work better than the fiber washers anyway.

O-rings DO NOT work.....do not use rubber o-rings...u'll be lucky to get a good seal...my partner used them on his motor, they leaked, and he had to get his lower unit replaced. Boat tech said never to use the rubber o-rings....
