I lost a friend a week ago friday and didn't even know it. Dick Herringer a long time bass fishing friend a former Bass Pro Shop employee was killed at Table Rock Lake in a night boatng accident. He apparently hit a tree and was thrown out of the boat. He wasn't wearing a PFD.

I was told while at work Sunday. I haven't been working much and don't get the paper. I feel bad as the funeral was past by the time I found out. Eveyone a Bass Pro assumed that I knew.

Dick used to help run InBass (Iowa Nebraska Bass Federation) tournaments back in the late seventies and early eighties. Denny Brauer was part of this organization for a while. Dick was a bear of a man and great to talk to. A great school teacher and of course he loved his fishing.:(

Truly sad story. Biggest danger of MO's big lakes ... underwater hazards. Article said not wearing a PFD.

Such a terrible loss for a person who has touched so many lives. One part of the article made me pause.....

He was not wearing a life jacket.

Could his life have been saved? We will never know.

While in Wisconsin, I noticed 99% of the people boating were not wearing PFD's, even fishermen. The only 2 I saw were myself and the water Sheriff. I have my XPS Mustang hooked to my kill switch and the Sheriff motored over to me while I was going through a no-wake and commented that is was really nice to see a sober boat operator with a PFD on!!

There is a show on, it seems almost every darn night, that comes on after Cops and it's about cops on the water during college spring breaks where they are always running around Lake Mead I believe, stopping people (kids) from drunk driving, running in no wake zones, and anything else they can think of in order to issue a ticket. What I have noticed, and they should issue themselves a citation for, is that I have not seen one of the "water" officers wear a PFD yet. And that's usually after furnishing anyone they're taking in a Mae West and told how to put it on. Another case of Don't do what I do, do what I say!

Sorry for your loss...sounds like he was a good man.

i too am guilty of not wearing a PFD when fun fishing and my mind set is changing. Too many losses this year.

I dont understand why, if in a tournament, he wasnt wearing one.

As for the TV show....I have never seen an on the water officer NOT wear a pfd. ALl of them on St Clair do. Sheriff, DNR, USCG, Boarder Patrol, etc.

Mini, have you seen the show I'm talking about? Not only don't they have any PFD's on, they are both behind the wheel of a Center Console boat 'Standing Up'.. You have chosen two diametrically different positions on this matter. That you have "never seen an on the water officer NOT wear a pfd. and then you say ALL of them on St. Clair do.!

I seriously doubt if you have seen ALL of the officers on St. Clair period, much less with or without. When I see it again I will furnish you the exact address to get in touch with when you could. Save your challenges but this guy will never will.

Uncle Billy

My prayers go out to his family.

I am guilty of not wearing my PFD,I owe it to my family to start.

It makes me stop and think,if it's my time to go.

I could only hope it will be on a lake, doing what I love...

and if I have to die on the highway,I hope my boat is with me,

meaning I was going fishing or on my way back.

Life is short, give your wife a kiss and your kids a hug....

Then take them fishing.

God Bless,Jim
