Hey Toxic and any other Lake Anna cold side fishermen. I have a buddy coming in from NY and he wants to fish, but the wives and kids want to tube. We are going to hit Anna early and fish til lunch, then tube in the afternoon. Problem is I havent fished anna before. Can anyone point me in the direction of some good spots?

Thanks

Jerry

You should think of hiring Scott as a guide for a day or even a half day. Great guy, pretty good fisherman...lol

Cold side of Lake Anna is about 10,000 acres big. That's a LOT of ground to cover! While Tox is more familiar with the "honey holes" I'll suggest you try areas like Rose Valley, the Splits and down by the dikes. Also try the docks near Sturgeon Creek. Since there is very little vegetation (at least that I've been able to find!), artificial structures like the dikes, docks and drop offs seem to be the best bet.

For tubing, if you go down lake from Anna Point Marina, past Sturgeon Creek, there is a cluster of islands on the left. Nice back coves for some tubing or just anchoring to swim without fighting the wakes from the inevitable summer boat traffic.

Oh - and be careful!! Lake Anna's cold side is an unrestricted HP, publicly accessible water body meaning lots of jet skiers, big boats, bass boats, wakeboarding boats, pontoons, deck boats, etc. all mixed together. Not everyone is as familiar with proper watercraft operation and the rules of the water as they should be. That and residents of DC seem to have "discovered" the lake. Its popularity is growing.

You all make reference to Lake Anna the hot side and the cold side. Up north are lakes are the same temperature all over. Please explain to this dumb Yankee the difference.;)

nuclear reator. one lake is 10k acreas and attached to it is a 3k cooling lake, before it dumps into cold side, if you need a better explanation bill will be along to go into more detail.

Davey,

For lack of a better explination, Lake Anna is really 2 totally seperate lakes. One 10,000 public acres fed by 2 rivers and numerous creeks (cold side), one 3,000 private acres used to cool down the water after it has cooled the reactor, aka the hot side. The hot side has no public access and is private. There is no way to get to the hot side from the cold side. We, by the good graces of Mr. Hamilton, get access to the hotside which is the best game in town during the winter months. The coldest the water gets is normally in the high 50's. We have fished the day after Christmas in 60 degree water with buzzbaits!!!! The cold side has some huuuuge bass and the hot side has it's share but is known for big numbers more than size. We kind of abandon the hot side in the summer because it can get water temps over 100 degrees!!

Jerry,

It is all very dependant on when you are coming and the lake condition at that time. Right now, I would imagine the rivers (concentration of big fish) are pretty muddy. If I had to go today, I would run uplake till I found the mudline and work my way back twords the dam. email me when you are coming and I will have hopefully been out by then and can give you a better report. MikeC knows the lake well and has been out there recently so drop him a line also. Between the 2 of us you should get a pretty good idea.

Don't forget to also check out the fishing reports from some of the Lake Anna marinas:

If you get to the marinas and are not familiar with Lake Anna, its probably worth investing in a map as well. The GMCO is one of the best out there. Most of the marinas should carry them.
