A few weeks ago my motor started to lose power on acceleration. It would rev just fine but when I would put the throttle down in gear it would just bog down and run about 10 mph tops. After a while it would like fix itself and run fine. I checked the plugs and they looked kind of gunked up so I changed them to some new NKG's. First time out with the new plugs was last week and the motor was hard to start but ran OK after it did start. Today, same old problem. Hard to start, no power, then after we fished for awhile it starts and runs fine.

I'm thinking fuel filter. What do you all think? And where is the fuel filter on a Merc 50hp and how big a job is it. Is there anything else that could make the motor run like this?

I had the same problem with a 1988 100 hp Merc. a couple of years ago.

Turned out to be the power pack. Exactly as you described.

I think a $150 for a new one.

Yep...my 90 did the same thing only after about 3 weeks..good thing it was still under warranty..I don't think those ECU's are cheap.

I'll second the power pack problem. Intermittment power loss for awhile, then one day during a tourney - out. No power at all. Cost about $150.00 to have it changed.

Thanks for the replies.

What is a power pack and is it something I can do myself? How can I be certian that is for sure what is wrong?

Take a fuel sample and make sure there is no water in the gas.. This can cause all kinds of stupid stuff..

Harpo--

If you want to check for water in the fuel, get a small cupfull and dump it on some clean, dry concrete. The gas will quickly absorbe leaving any water droplets behind.

An old timer did this with my Jeep one day,and sure enough there was water beaded up all over the place.

Thanks, I was hoping to keep getting repies until I got one I could afford. Steve, it looks like you came in with the low bid. LOL

Seriously it looks like a trip to the dealer. First time Ol' Super Soaker will spend the night away from home and just in time for the fall feeding frenzy. Last fall I was dealing with getting a new trolling motor installed.

I'm not sure about the new motors but the power pack on the older ones is an epoxy sealed box that bolts to the side of the motor block. It has spark wires going to each plug on one end and a bunch of wires on the other side.

What it does is to time and send out a high pulse to each plug, replacing the old points system. (something like that anyway).
