We are thinking about taking a trip to Gatlinburg, TN., Feb 5 . I have never driven in the mountains, or in areas with snow. I live in flat Louisiana, and was wondering if I need to worry about salt on my vehicle, and driving conditions. Any info will be appreciated.

Bubby54, You don't have to worry much about the roads in the Gatlinburg area, they keep it cleared when it snows. It really does not snow much around here any way, about three or four measureable snow falls per year. All those snowy pictures that you see from the Ski Resort are mostly man made powder. I live in Knoxville, about 20 to 30 miles away and we go to Gatlinburg/ Smokies often in the winter. Gatlinburg is such a huge tourist draw that they start salting or putting down chemicals as soon as snow is predicted.

The only place that you would ever have to worry about is US441 going over the Smokies to Cherokee, NC where the casinos are. The stretch at Clingman's Dome can get hairy, but again, they pretty much keep it clear.

But all being said, it never hurts to be ready. Who knows, you may be here when it snows. Today it was 71 degrees and partly sunny?

E-mail me if you need any info.,

Safe distance to anyone in front of you, keep your momentum up when going around turns and uphill. Worst case scenario like Dave said is use your tranny for slowing down, better than jamming on the brakes.

We go in that area to hike and backpack and there is very seldom a problem with snow. I have encountered snow but on a limited basis and around 6,000 feet elevation. Around the towns of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, etc. it's very well maintained. There can be times of heavy traffic but not as bad as in the summer. The home of Blue Smoke.
