Bob I've tried not to jump onto your workload list here but, I do have a question before venturing into my next preventative maintenance project. BTW, thanks in advance for all you do here to help us.

I'm going to be changing my impeller (first time to do it myself). I've watched a good YouTube video for doing this on a Merc and it does seem simple enough (with some precautions).

My outboard info is as follows: 2001 Tracker/Mercury 75 hp

Model: 1-075412Y

ID # : OT276274

My question and concern is, before dropping the lower unit to access the impeller; should I put the gear selector in either gear or nuetral? Also, will the re-assembly just go right in or will/could I have to play with the shift lever to get the shaft splines aligned properly? I've heard some horror stories of difficulty and want to do it right.

Thanks again for your help.

I prefer to do it "in gear, forward". This way, when the 'case is aligned and pushed up, all that is required is to turn the prop shaft counterclockwise to align the drive shaft splines. As you stated, you have to remove it in gear as well. In either scenario, make sure the kill switch is pulled. I dread it when I see people "bump the starter" to align the splines. That is an accident waiting to happen. ;)

Bob B.,

Thanks again for all the help you give 'dummies' like me. We endeavor to learn and you are gracious to assist us.

If you have any additional tips or advise on my situation here, they will be greatly appreciated.

Bob, let me just add this too. I work a retired man's job (part time) at Bass Pro. If you care to send me a private message with an addy, I'd be happy to send you a token of my appreciation.
