Wisconsin Changes Tournament Rules

BassMaster July/August 2004 Issue, Page 22

Wisconsin wildlife officials will have greater authority over fishing tournaments under new legislation signed by Gov. Jim Doyle.

The legislation will allow the DNR to deny a permit for a fishing tournament, place conditions on the permit, to restrict the number of participants, or control event timing to protect fish populations.

The bill also contains a daily limit exemption for bass tournaments. Currently anglers must release a fish immediately after it is caught so it won't count against the bag limit. Under the new bill, anglers may cull fish to increase the weight of their limit.

The DNR permits about 300 tournaments a year, said Michael Staffs, the agency's director of Fisheries Management and Habitat Protection. The current permitting system applies only to organized tournaments on Wisconsin waters with $500 or more in cash prizes and more than 20 boats or 40 participants.
