Hey All-

It took me until my 5th try of the season, but I finally finished first in one of our club tournaments...

9 boats fished...a slightly low turnout, mainly due to theatening weather - thunderboomers in the area yesterday.

We fished for 3 and half hours and a cold front passed through as the storms moved out. I caught 3 largemouth on a pumkinseed brush hog (thanks Jon Pski!) fished off a deep weed edge. Caught all three within 100 feet of each other in the first hour of the tournament before the front moved through. It wasn't a huge bag of fish (7lbs 10oz, biggest was 2lbs 12oz), but no one else had 3 fish. Big bass for the tourney went 3lbs 14oz. My #1 partner (my 11 year old son Jacob) was there to help me land 'em, but wasn't able to but any in the box this time...

The best part was that TRACKER RULED!!!

The TV-18 came in ahead of Triton, Ranger, Javelin, and Skeeter (among others) hahahaha

Good for you Andy! I'm awaiting the time when I can do that. I think that the other members of my club are dreading the day the guy in the aluminum 'walleye' boat (Targa 18) whups up on them.

Love them pumpkinseed brush hogs.

Andy you ROCK!!!

I think this is a sign of things to come. Nitroowners.com memebers will dominate every fishing circuit there is...LOL

Do you think any sponors keep there eyes on this board???

We can only hope the sponsors are watching!!!

I'd start fishing out of 9 series Nitro...if they "gave" me one...hahaha

Hey Marke...

check your email---I sent you one.

Congrat's BigDog!! Stay on those deep weed edges for another month or so......you'll get a couple more WINS!!

Fish BIG baits sloowwwww....7-9" worms and J&P's...I loved wormin'/jiggin' deep weed edges in the summer during my "club days"....won my share of tournaments doing it too!

12-15ft' deep edges and look for isolated clumps or "points" where the weeds stop growing,...fish the "outside" points and edges in the summer and move towards the "inside curves" and deep edges in the fall........those are the BULLSEYES!! Good luck and don't be affraid to sloooowww waaayyyyyyyy down!! Fish for 5 bites! They'll all be GOOD ones!!

Mac,

Are you available for summer largemouth lessons? You can give a seminar on Champlain. I usually struggle with summertime bass. I have been doing ok with smallies in 10 to 15 feet, but haven't found the right place for LM. We have been catching smallies just about everywhere we try around the rocky islands. I'll look for the outside weed edges! Thanks for the tips.

LM prefer weeds more than SM......SM like rocks/gravel/sand and current. LM prefer thicker cover like weed edges and weed clumps, wood,...stumps,...blowdowns, pilings etc...they are much more structure oriented than SM..especially during the "summer peak" that we're in now! It deffinetely pays off to find a weed line or a mid lake hump with weeds on it,...then prowl the edges with Big worms and Jigs....if the weeds stop growing in 12-15ft...fish the very edge of it...15-17ft ...the fish will usually position themselves just inside the edges and they'll be looking for baitfish swimming along the outside edges. Also...don't worry about frontal conditions when you're fishing the deeper edges too.....deep fish are much less affected by a cold front than the shallow fish are...they're also less affected by boat traffic and light conditions....they'll bite mid-day just as often as first or last light! (It's always darker down there anyway!) That's why I prefer darker baits,...black/blue,..blue fleck,..pumpkin seed, etc..etc....good luck Bob,..you'll be sirprised how many toads hang out on those deeper spots and how willing they are to bite!! They don't get pressured anywhere as hard as shallow "flats" fish. Happy huntin'!

Thanks gents!

Mac-

What you describe is EXACTLY where I caught my fish...

They were packed pretty close together on that weed edge also...closest thing to a "school" that I've hooked into...they were all within 100 feet or so of each other and only varied in size by 5 or 6 ounces...

This technique works on all our lakes around SW Michigan at this time of year...

Cool!!....They'll almost always school together by size too.....if you catch a 4lbr down there,...expect a bunch of 4's and 5's to be there!!...If you get 2lbr's...they'll all be about that same size. If you pre-fish an edge or a hump like that a day ot two befor a tournament and you stick a toad,...LEAVE!!...don't fish that spot again until tournament day!...LOL And be sure to thouroughly cover that area when you're fishing it,....sometimes the biggest fish won't bite until you've made a dozen casts to the same area....here's a trick to keep in mind too next time you fish a deep edge. After you've really hammered the area and you decide to leave.......come back one more time before weigh-in and fish the sweet spot again with a totally different colored bait....(ie: a White J&P combo vs. the color you were using...make it a radical change)...you may get the biggest fish in the school by doing that! Good Luck Andy...keep fishing those deep edges...they'll be good spots all through august and well into sept!
