For those of you who use helmets/face shields, or have an opinion (man - that's dangerous here!), I have a couple of questions.

What type of helmet do you use?

Has anyone looked into the paint ball helmets?

If you are a 'boater', do you have one for potential partners/companions, or is it their responsibility?

Since I'm going to fish the SC Federation tourneys this year, and will likely be riding in some pretty fast rigs (and in the cold), wanted to get some input.

Thanks.

Tex:

I use a Nolan N60 full-face motorcycle helmet with interchangable face shields. It's like the photo below, but gloss black. It's very nice to have on cold days and cold/rainy days.

For my partner, I keep a set of goggles in the glove compartment. I looked at paintball face shields, but didn't like the way they sat on my face and thougth that the wind would just smash it back into my nose and jaw.

One thing to consider is the fit. Be very deliberate about choosing a helmet that fits correctly, and consider how the design of the helmet can potentially cause injuries in an ejection. On mine, I know that if I get ejected, I need to tuck my chin in as close to my chest as possible to keep water from entering the only opening around the neck ring.

If you want to go all-out, there is a company that makes helmets made specifically for boaters. I'm attaching a link to an article about it.

Tex - The first time riding in Dan's 929 (when it was a WHOPPING 34 degrees) he has 2 full-faced motorcyle helmets with vents in his rear storage (MAN that 929 has a lot of storage, Scott and I could Sleep in the rodlockers!!) and it was VERY Welcome! Now Dan is a STUD and with the 929 running 76mph he just put his hood up on his jacket! NOT me, that Helmet was used everytime we took off and glad I did!

Now, I would assume (the REAL T fisherman will chime in) that the partner would be expected to bring his own.

You ready for the 6-8 inches of SNOW you're supposed to get tonite?

I dont use a helmet.it will cut down on periferal(sp) vision. I rode motorcycles for years and full face helmets will do that. I like to see everything around me when im traveling at 60+ in my boat. What i wear on cold mornings is a thing called a baclava its made for snowmobile riders and skiers. it covers everything except my eyes. on really cold mornings i also wear ski goggles. while they do cut p. vision somewhat its not as bad as a helmet. Where i fish alot in NH spring and fall mornings mean temps in the thirties, ive fished and ran in snowstorms, ice storms etc. i have made some pretty long runs at 60+ wearing just the headpeice and goggles and have never been cold.

A helmet is the way to go for cold weather and rain, match that up with a BPS 100mph suit and you will be amazed how warm and dry you will stay......Makes me wanna crack some ice and go fishing just thinkin about it LOL

Once again, great info from both sides of the question. Linked in the picture of the Think version of their new helmet. Of course, it's only $195.00; and if you want a custom color, add another $30.00. WOW!

Yes Trep, we are as ready as possible. Right now, the forecast for the snow is all over the board. All I know is that it is fairly cold out now, and going to get lower - substantially. Supposed to start sometime later this evening, into the night. Front is moving fast enough, that it should blow through pretty quickly. But since we-un's here in the south don't have many plows, it will take awhile to clear.

In Rock Hill, we may well be in that area that is on the borderline of snow/ice. Much rather have the snow. Don't need another ice problem.

I have 2 sheilds from bass pro.... 19.95 each.

That along with a good knit beany work great!

OK i KNOW Rob is going to laugh at me, but I have the "Buff" from Survivor to keep my neck and ears warm! It works GREAT! When FLYIng down the lake at 30mph I have my Buff around my neck, ears and over my nose then my hood on my BPS jacket! Works great, but on Dan's 929 the Helmet is a MUST!!

This is what i wear. works great even on the coldest days

ninja fisherman.... good one tox!

i've heard of going to an army surplus store and getting what i believe is called a tankers cap which wraps around your head and neck is supposed to be good. i think they run less than $10.

First time I saw guys wearing helmets on the water I thought they were crazy..5 min later I found out I was..

A word of caution....do not cinch the helmet strap on. You may be decapitated (sp?) when you hit the water....

I used to have a helmet befopre my truck was broken into...lol. Now I use the Fleece hood from Fleece Corners I bought on the group buy. With my 100 MPH suit and hood, it is almost as nice as a helmet! AND I dont have to worry about getting my head ripped off.

I have seen those 200 dollar jobs and they are nice. Havent used one on the water, but it sure has the periphrial(sp?) vision....
