Greg, a friend of mine gave me a new in box Ruger 77/17 Stainless All weather rifle today. What do I have here??? Is it a 17HMR, or I am told they have 2 different calibers. Is this true, about the two caliber thing?? I have the book, but wanted some knowledge about this firearm before I got into it much. This young man hunts some property we own, and is very grateful I let him hunt there. He told me he had it for a year and never shot it, didn't even purchase ammo for it. Help me out here, I am big on handguns, shotguns, rifle experience limited.

Should be a .17HRM. Nothing marked on the rifle? If it has the detachable rotary box magazine it is a .17HRM (rimfire)

Afterthought.... check out www.predatormasters.com Should have some good info on the rifle and the round.

There was a pretty herated discussion about the Remington Semi Auto .17 and a safety recall. But, no known (to me) issues with any of the bolt guns...

Ruger 77/17 is chambered in .17HMR. It should be marked on the barrel or the action somewhere. Nice rifle. The link below gives the specs on the rifle.

There are 2 other Ruger 77 models; the 77/22 (chambered in .22LR, .22 Magnum, and .22 Hornet) and the 77/44 (chambered in .44 Magnum)

The two calibers are .17HMR (your rifle) as stated above and .17 Mach 2... I don't believe Ruger ever made a 77/17 that shoots the Mach 2's? I have a 77/17 as well and I am sure you will be VERY pleased with it! Word of advice, buy the Hornady ammo... I have tried every available ammo and the best results came from Hornady!

Knot,

Interesting comment about the ammo... Because, when Remington recalled their semi-auto 597 they related information about ammo. Seems that it is all the same. All loaded by the same manufacturer...

Greg,

Correct but I do believe they use different bullets... Same powder, same grain, same casing but different ballistic tip. The Federal ammo was second best which was strictly a hollow point, the Remington ammo looked to have the same bullet other than the green tip (not red) but with the Hornady ammo @ 50yds I am within 3/8" out of 5 shots and with the Remington I am closer to 3/4". Then @ 100yds I am within 7/8" with Hornady and over 1 1/2" with Remington... I know I know lots of variables but I was just relaying my results.

Thanks everyone!! On the barrel is marked 17 M2. I will try to read the book tonight. Just been busy... not with work... things around the house.

Justin, quick question.... is is different ammo than the 17 HMR?????

Yes, here are links for reference... :D

17 HMR is based off of a necked down 22 Mag case.

17 M2 is based off of a necked down 22LR case.

The difference between the two in performance and pressure is much like the difference between the .22 Mag and .22LR.

A little suprising that you have a .17 M2 in that model. Ruger does not list one currently:

http://www.ruger.com/products/rotaryMagazine7717/models.html

But I did find one on "Collectors Firearms" here:

You might have a very limited production rifle. Might be worth more in the future. You just never know. Sold for a pretty good chunk of change originally too.

Very nice looking firearm! I hope you enjoy it!

All the best,

Glenn

I just realized - We never answered your question directly. Sorry about that.

Yes, 17M2 is a different ammo than the 17HMR. The two are not interchangable.

All the best,

Glenn
