One of the tips we picked up at BASS University, courtesy of Don Iovino:

Anyone use the 'rubber' pegs to peg their sinkers?

Don uses these, but saves the portion he cuts off after pegging the weight. He then inserts the 'leftover' into the eye of his worm hook after tying it on to his line. Pull it in snug, then trim off both sides to about 1/8 inch. Next, rig your worm/soft plastic (works for tubes too!) onto your hook...the tiny piece of rubber will keep the head of the worm from sliding down your hook!

Pretty slick idea...I remember Kevin VanDam saying that he would use a toothpick to do this after he put the worm on the hook, but Don's idea sounds better...

Or...

You can buy the ones 'made' for the hooks:

These pics come from Don's website...

Pretty good thought. However, I've pretty much stuck to toothpicks to peg my sinkers. Had some of the rubber ones, but just had trouble handling them. Besides, I can stock up on the toothpicks, when paying for breakfast, before heading out.

Been doing that fer years. Had a guy in Fla show me in the early seventies how he put rubber bands throught he worm weights to keep them from slipping up the line when flippin them into the bonnet pads.

I found what I consider the perfect item. It's a bullet shaped Split Shot! You just hand crimp it on the line where ever you need it and take it off when you don't! I've used this for TX rigs and then if I want a floating or split shot line I just remove and either add nothing or a small split shot!

Yup, I'm with Tex on this one. They saw ya comin' Andy! LOL Toothpicks are a LOT cheaper and you can also use them AS toothpicks to pick the samich outta yur teeth at weigh-in.

I'm all for pickin' my teeth! LOL

I didn't thing the rubber thingy to peg the weight was the good part...I thought using it for keeping the soft plastics on the hook was cool!

I think if you use a toothpick for that, it wouldn't work as slick...

Hey Trepster, does that crimp on bullet weight ever cause break offs at the weight?

I would think that crimping your line wouldn't be a good idea. It works great for panfish that don't pull to hard but if you have a good size fish tugging on your line it just might give at the weight.

Oh I just remembered.....you don't catch big fish...LOL

Just kidding

I've used these rubber pegs and did not like them at all. They will hold the wait where it is, but it is almost impossible to move the weight without damaging the line once you peg it.

DON'T BITE LINE WITH YOUR TEETH!!! I chipped a bottom front tooth last spring doing that!! Line clippers are a helluva lot cheaper than crowns!!!

Wolf - I've never in my life had a break off, maybe I don't catch e'm that big!!! LOL For one day i crimp on/crimp off. At the end of the day I cut and re-tie for the next day. As with lures, I feel the line regularly for any abraisions and cut/retie if necessary.

Mac,

I cannot believe it when someone 'bites' the line. My teeth hurt just watching it. The guy I fished with on Saturday, bit off 2 or 3 lines. Thought he was french kissing the fish!

Tex

I bite the line all the time....unless it is over 20 pound test.

The rubber stoppers work, but toothpicks are cheaper. Toothpicks will damage line if you are using lighter (14 and under) line.

BullShot is a good alternative. I have had them for a couple of years and used them with good success. I especially like the tiny ones for softjerkbaits....

Mini

I bite my line all the time but the way Tex states it it just puts a whole different meening to it. But Jimmy Huston kisses his fish why cant I? LOL

Things that'll make you go Buhhhhhhhh.

T.S.

Since I'm a retired dentist, should I put in my 2 cents on biting line? Well, I guess I'll stay out of this one.

Trep & Wolf -

I picked up a bunch of those weights in something like 1/32 ounce last year at a Wallyworld close-out. I've used them on Senko/Stick-O's and finesse worms. They seem to add just enough weight to get them down a bit faster.....

I've never had a line break - even 2# and 4# for trout - while using split shot which attach the same way.

me!

me! I am just TOO lazy and fear the precious few hours I get on the water is wasted cutting/retieing, so the bullet shot works great for split shoting, texas rigging or just worm/hook!
