You have a definite problem Scott.
If you are getting grease on the BACK of the wheels, you need a new seal. However, no one complains about that, so I'm guessing you have it on the front of your wheels. Your 2001 901 (per your profile) should have a zerk fitting in the center of the axle. There should be a piece of pot metal around it that extends from your axle about 2 inches. There should be a rubber center piece in there. They're about 50 cents each (the rubber centers).
Now, if you have all of the hardware I've discussed, you're probably suffering from heat expansion. So, take the rubber part out, shoot your zerk until grease comes out (or until NEW grease comes out if you want to replace the grease (good idea). Now, rub your finger around the outside of the zerk to clean out the grease filling the cap area (it doesn't do any good there anyway). Now put your rubber cap back on, using a screwdriver around the edge to "burp" the air out, while pushing in on the center of the rubber cap. You want it to be somewhat "indented". Now, when your grease heats up from travel, you might get a little swelling pushing the center cap out a tad (and if so, I'd burp them one more time before dunking the first time). Now, when they're cold, they'll be puckered in, but when at operating temp, will be in a normal position or slightly puckered out.
What WAS happening was the grease would warm up, create pressure, push some out while running down the highway, and you'd get grease on your wheels. Consequently, you probably had a small leak in the rubber cap (from being pushed out) and probably got water in that grease... again, the grease in the cap, which doesn't matter anyway.
