My new (this year) tournament Partner, John Mannerino and I just won the GNWC Fox Chain of Lake Walleye tourney today. Great fun cashing a check... And, we did it on tough water against a cloud of "local boys" !!!!

Well Tox... First, we proved that the cliche about "even a blind pig can find an acorn sometimes".. is true! John and I target big fish by trolling large crank baits in river systems when possible... This time our tactics and the specific lake's limits/slot favored us... The lake has per 2 man team a 4 fish 14<18 slot and 2 fish over 24... Despite only "one" fish.. it was over 24... 26+" and 6.59lbs... And everybody else targeted post spawn males in the 14>18 range... 1.0 to 1.75 lb fish.. do the math... so we headed out of the lake chain into a small river, The Fox, that feeds the chain and went after "big fish"... It worked... our one legal over 24" beat out numerous "4s" of keepers in the 14<18 slot... next "biggest" fish was 1.77lbs... The eventual second place team jigged up their fourth fish right next to us 10 minutes before the weigh-in... we all were trying for insurance fish in the same area clsoe to the weighin... We didn't get a keeper there, but our one legal still held by something like a 1/3 of a lb.

I'm pretty easy to see/identify... My Magna 19 has sides higher than a Carrier and is battleship grey... So if you see a boat that makes you wanna sign Anchors Aweigh... LOL!.

A lot of guys were targeting walleyes in all the usual places... Marie is good.. Bluff can be... And the only area's of Pistakee for Walleyes are around the bridges, pilings, etc... becasue of the current flow... Our idea (above) was to go after the 24+ fish... one of those (we proved) is better than 4 14-18" fish. Walleyes are pretty pedictable... know the time frame on the lake... pre- post.. spawn...summer stc.. and you can generally have a "pattern"... On the Chain... there is a big relatinship between "current" and the walleyes and also light becasue of the shallow nature of most of the water.... That's why we like to fish, as we did, in the river... we fished all the way up to the 173 bridge trolling crankbaits on "three-ways" and flat lines... Fire tiger, black/gold, shad, orange; rapalas, shallow shad raps, and rogues in 3 1/2 to 6 inches are what we work until we find what the fish want... THen we run that on all four rods... takes teamwork and practice to move rods, nets, setup/run/ cut off the kicker... I have a great fishing partner (and a great life partner who lets me fish as much as I do...)

Good job! Greg. We're happy for ya. Mabe it's the beginning of a long winning streek.

Nice work Greg,

Here is a portion of the press release from www.liveleaderboard.

One big walleye makes all the difference

By Steve Weisman

GNWC Publiciy Director

Knowing that one big walleye could make the difference at Saturday's

(April 26) Fox Chain of Lakes qualifier, the team of John Mannerino of

Chicago, IL and Greg Meyer of Elgin, IL connected big time and their

6.59-pounder won the Grand National Walleye Cup's first place prize of

$1200.

According to GNWC Executive Director Bernie Barringer, Mannerino and Meyer

took a big gamble, and it definitely paid off. "They swung for the home

run," said Barringer. "They were the only team that stuck with a trolling

bite. They used a #7 Fire Tiger Shad Rap to catch their winning fish."

In addition to winning the tournament, they also won the Abu Garcia Big Fish

Award of two ABU Garcia 6500 Linecounter reels.

Congratuations Greg.. Keep it up for the rest of the season..
