Some background info on Kerry from a Boston newspaper columnist

THE REAL KERRY By HOWIE CARR February 5, 2004 -- BOSTON

ONE of the surest ways to get the phones ringing on any Massachusetts talk-radio show is to ask people to call in and tell their John Kerry stories. The phone lines are soon filled, and most of the stories have a common theme: our junior senator pulling rank on one of his constituents, breaking in line, demanding to pay less (or nothing) or ducking out before the bill arrives.

The tales often have one other common thread. Most end with Sen. Kerry inquiring of the lesser mortal: "Do you know who I am?" And now he's running for president as a populist. His first wife came from a Philadelphia Main Line family worth $300 million. His second wife is a pickle-and-ketchup heiress.

Kerry lives in a mansion on Beacon Hill on which he has borrowed $6 million to finance his campaign. A fire hydrant that prevented him and his wife from parking their SUV in front of their tony digs was removed by the city of Boston at his behest.

The Kerrys ski at a spa the widow Heinz owns in Aspen, and they summer on Nantucket in a sprawling seaside "cottage" on Hurlbert Avenue, which is so well-appointed that at a recent fund-raiser, they imported porta-toilets onto the front lawn so the donors wouldn't use the inside bathrooms. (They later claimed the decision was made on septic, not social, considerations).

It's a wonderful life these days for John Kerry. He sails Nantucket Sound in "the Scaramouche," a 42-foot Hinckley powerboat. Martha Stewart has a similar boat; the no-frills model reportedly starts at $695,000. Sen. Kerry bought it new, for cash. Every Tuesday night, the local politicians here that Kerry elbowed out of his way on his march to the top watch, fascinated, as he claims victory in more primaries and denounces the special interests, the "millionaires" and "the overprivileged."

"His initials are JFK," longtime state Senate President William M. Bulger used to muse on St. Patrick's Day, "Just for Kerry. He's only Irish every sixth year." And now it turns out that he's not Irish at all. But in the parochial world of Bay State politics, he was never really seen as Irish, even when he was claiming to be (although now, of course, he says that any references to his alleged Hibernian heritage were mistakenly put into the Congressional Record by an aide who apparently didn't know that on his paternal side he is, in fact, part-Jewish).

Kerry is, in fact, a Brahmin - his mother was a Forbes, from one of Massachusetts' oldest WASP families. The ancestor who wed Ralph Waldo Emerson's daughter was marrying down.

At the risk of engaging in ethnic stereotyping, Yankees have a reputation for, shall we say, frugality. And Kerry tosses around quarters like they were manhole covers. In 1993, for instance, living on a senator's salary of about $100,000, he managed to give a total of $135 to charity.

Yet that same year, he was somehow able to scrape together $8,600 for a brand-new, imported Italian motorcycle, a Ducati Paso 907 IE. He kept it for years, until he decided to run for president, at which time he traded it in for a Harley-Davidson like the one he rode onto "The Tonight Show" set a couple of months ago as Jay Leno applauded his fellow Bay Stater.

Of course, in 1993 he was between his first and second heiresses - a time he now calls "the wandering years," although an equally apt description might be "the freeloading years."

For some of the time, he was, for all practical purposes, homeless. His friends allowed him into a real-estate deal in which he flipped a condo for quick resale, netting a $21,000 profit on a cash investment of exactly nothing. For months he rode around in a new car supplied by a shady local Buick dealer. When the<

I don't remember him ever using his middle initial until he ran for president. What does the F actually stand for, Flipper maybe?

Not so much in support of Kerry, but more in the vein of "spreading the wealth," our current president is familiar with the taste of the silver spoon.

Bill Clinton, on the other hand, was born into significantly more modest means, and is clearly self-made, regardless of anyone's feelings about him.

My point? I don't judge these people by how much money their family accumulated. Their actions speak louder than their bank books.

Anyone one running for office and says he would raise gas prices to 5 dollars a gallon to force more fuel efficent cars to be made cant be that sharp.Even clinton wasnt that stupid.Just dumb enough to get caught.Im not a real big Bush fan either.I think his family has to much oil stock. Not much to pick from in this election.Maybe someone will come along in the next one worth voting for.

No doubt,.....seems nowadays we're faced with the choice of voting "against" someone vs. "for" the other guy/gal!! LOL

(i.e. I don't like either candidate, but i REALLY don't like so and so,.....what a drag!!...BUT,..atleast we GET to vote!!)

Jr.

John Wayne was a draft dodger and Elvis was a drug addict. Your right either one would have made a great president. Don't get me wrong I'm a HUGE fan of both. I'm just getting sicker and sicker of politcians. Once a democrat a looong time ago, now reduced to voting as mentioned above for the lesser of two evils. Being a big gun rights fan I guess I'll let that lead me for a while.

Well, as far as I'm concerned the only part of the Bill of Rights the Democrats get behind is the 5th amendment. The rest are subject to their "living document" interpretation of the Constitution. I'm surprised in Louisiana there isn't rioting in the streets after that little "Search without warrants" decision from that judge. I liked that little phrase from the police department or something..."It won't be abused..." Ya right... got some land to sell you in South Central Florida...waterfront too.

Its sad.Money can make the most honest man you ever met turn dishonest.I dont think John Wayne dodged the draft. The military figured that he would be the best recruiting tool they ever had by making those war movies. After sands of Iwojima inlistment went up a great deal.Sometimes I think we would be better off with a real jackass or elephant in the white house.Your going to need a pooper scouper no matter who wins!

Here's how I'm deciding who to vote for.

I ask myself this question:

Would I ever want to see this man's face on my money every day???

John Kerry....one UGLY dude!!!

Hey guys,

It's the evil of two lessers. Not the other way around.

ruger I don't agree. Money does not make honest men dishonest. Good people with money do good things. Bad people with money do bad things.

I was watching a documentary on Jimmy Carter last night. Great example of a humble public servant who went to Washington to right some of the traditional wrongs in that town. He was astute, intelligent, and truly a custodian of the people's interests. He went to war against his own party over pork barrel politics, trying to deliver a balanced budget.

You all know how it turned out.

Washington chews up and spits out honest people.

Truer words were never spoken. I get to watch it first hand. The problem (in a nut shell) is that the system is a power thing and once elected, politicians begin a course of action that will get them re-elected, they forget to serve. The power brokers in politics are RUTHLESS and it is an "all's fair" attitude. Even those with good intentions end up a casualty of the system. The voting public is partly to blame by being indifferent, blind party loyal and not educating themselves on the issues (totally skewed by the media) and the people running for office.

Flawed as it is, I still don't think there is a better alternative out there.

It's all about the money. The money to get elected and re-elected and then delivering the favorable treatment to the contributors once in office. How do you think Bush got so much in his campaign war chest. Certianly not because so many fatcat corporate contributors are charmed by his boyish good looks and articulate ways. Yeah yeah I know it goes on on both sides.

Until we put our foot down and demand a stop to our political offices being sold to the highest bidder nothing will change. The only truly honest man in Washington, John McCain, tried and was slapped down by the lies and big money from the Bush primary campaign in 2000. Toxic, there is a better way, it's called campaign finance reform. Shorten the campaign season, set a cap on how much money can be spent and reveal exactly where it comes from, and put an end to the lies in the campaign ads such as the ones that the Bush campaign is running against Kerry right now. The government would not allow an automobile, food or OTC medication to be advertised with the blatant misrepresentations that are in the current campaign ads running right now.

No argument from me, it just seems that they should be forced to print the truth, not propaganda.....But truth is not always an easy thing to define. That's why we have lawers, fine print and stooooopid lawsuits.

Warren Zevon said it best.....There's three ways to get out of trouble....

Lawers,

Guns, and

Money.
