I have a 1996 Nitro 170TF that came with a Humminbird Wideeye. Actually, I think it says Tracker on it but it's a HB. It stopped working. I have voltage to it but it just won't turn on anymore. Anyhow I need a new fishfinder.

I have been looking at new units and have about decided to go with the Humminbird 570DI. The color unit is nice but a little more than I want to pay right now. I was also thinking about buying another used Wideeye from ebay so I would have two units. I thought about leaving the Wideeye by the console where it is now and may putting the new unit up by the trolling motor.

Anyone have any opinions on the 570DI or mounting locations?

I personally not sink any money into a Wide Eye unit as these cannot be serviced anymore. Instead mount the 570DI unit at the console and maybe buy a less expensive 2D sonar only unit for the trolling motor.

Thanks Humminbird_Greg for your advice. I will do just that. Any recommendation on the 2D unit for the front?

How big of a display are you wanting?

Do you want GPS up front?

Color or black and White display?

The 300 series units have 3.5 or 4 inch displays and should be some of the least expensive models that we build right now.

A step up from that would be another 500 series model, the conventional (non-DI) sonar units would cost less than your 570 DI did.

Greg, I have not bought the 570 DI yet. I currently don't have a fishfinder at all. My Wide Eye died on me. I would like but really don't need GPS. I normally fish smaller lakes and I have a handheld GPS that works fine for marking spots. I like the 570 DI because of the cost and features. Color and GPS would be nice but not a have to have I guess. I just can't decide if I should buy that one and mount it at the console or up front. I suppose if it's mounted at the console I can still rotate it so I can see it from the front casting deck.

I am considering buying the 570 DI (because I really want the down imaging and maybe a 300 series so I have one at the console and one up front. Then I'll just have to decide which I want to mount where.

My real problem in making a decision is...I really don't know how to use either. All I have ever used one for is to see how deep the water is. I don't know how to properly read the display to find baitfish, bottom contour changes etc. So I guess unless I somehow learn how to interpret what I am looking at, I will be spending the money to have a fancy depth finder.

Alvin,

The best way to learn how to use a sonar unit is to use it over a part of a lake that you are familiar with or go out with someone who understands what a sonar unit is showing them. There are also several web sites that have
