Well, I finally got my first jig fish. I've been using the jig-n-pig on and off (mostly off) for about 8 months now. I think I've been doing most of the things I needed to do, but haven't 'stuck with it' or gained the confidence as yet. I've got to the point where I can either cast or pitch it with some accuracy. Still needing to work on 'fall' and retrieve.
This past weekend, I was in Alabama for a family gathering/reunion type of event, just south of Birmingham. Many of my wife's family members, live on property that either has farm ponds, or have access to farm ponds. One of them was the 'host house' for the weekend, though I actually was not staying there.
After dinner on Friday, we went down to fish the last hour or so of daylight. I was given choice of weapons, so I intentionally picked up the jig-n-pig that was there. Took about 15 minutes to get the rod/reel/drag/line etc., in 'tune'. Then I started actually competitive - fishing from the bank.
Everyone had reported catching good numbers and some decent sized LM over the past couple of day (about a 8-10 acre pond with bass/bluegill/bream in it - no catfish). I was fishing from the bank.
Not many targets to throw/pitch to, so I was casting out and walking/shakin' it back to the bank. Only had one bite, but I put the wood to a nice 3 1/2 lber. Now that I finally have the feel of what I'm doing (including the bite and landing), I'm going to be able to progess with this technique.
Went back Sunday afternoon to the pond, fishing out of the jon boat with my brother-in-law. He 'boated' me the entire time, but I fixed him by again taking the large bass of the afternoon. Another nice 3-4 lber off a small frame spinner bait.
BTW, my brother-in-law specializes in fishing with a zebco 33 and the 'flying lure'. That's practically all he had with him. I just couldn't bring my self to throw one of them.
