How long are fire extinguishers good for? Mine has 2000 stamped on the neck and its in a 2001 896. I don't want to get a ticket for an expired extinguisher.

I believe that as long as the charge indicator is in the green you are ok.

I believe as long as the charge indicator is in the good range, you are o.k. Better double check with your local DNR to be safe.

Now that's a interesting subject! I just got checked at Dale Hollow the first week in April and the ranger pushed the pin on my extinguisher.......Now someone told me mine is no good now if it needs to be checked...is this true?

If the green pin is pushed in and it pops back out on it's own,..then your ext. is still "pressurized" and it's OKAY.

If the pin is pushed in and it stays in,..then you have lost your charge and you need to replace the extinguisher.

If you have a gauge, it is easy to tell.

If it only has the green post, if it is showing green or up, it is good.

No time limit on extinguishers. ALSO, dont ever think of having one filled. MUCH cheaper to just buy a new one.

Depend on regulations in your area. Extinguishers here, no matter where they are used must be check and approaved yearly by a certified etch who will tag and date the unit. The gauge will only tell you if it's operational or not which is independent of if it's expired or not. One little trick, which is not much of an issue if installed in a boat is to shke the unit once and awhile. The dry chem tends to "cake" at the bottom rendering them unsuable.

Short answer ask your local fire dept. what the reg's are in your area.

The small extinguishers like in my boat do not get checked and tagged. That is only for larger units in public buildings, etc. Thats Ga regs anyway.

mine doesn't have a gauge to check, but I'll ask the next DNR guy I see here in the building.
