I am looking for a Rapala 9 inch filet knife. I have 4, 5, and 7 inchers but cannot find the 9 inch knife anywhere. I tried their home page but they had nothing for purchasing one and nothing except the information on their knives. I have checked their outlet stores where Rapalas are sold and have been alot of their stores but they do not carry any 9 inchers. I supposed if I lived close to Erie or in upper Michigan, they may carry them in the stores there. Need some help here and any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

I've got a stupid question..... Are the electric knives you buy in the housewares department the same as filet knives?

(I don't own one because I never keep fish.)

Scott - I use a standard electric knife for the fish I keep. Got it 10 years ago at a garage sale when we lived in Galveston for $5, still use it today!!!

Scott:

We use a Black and Decker electric filet knife. The key is to find one with very flexible blades. Some of the electric fishing filet knives have blades that are just too stiff to control well. I'll see if I can find the model number. Well worth it, and once you learn to use one, you'll NEVER go back to a regular knife. Ross can work the electric knife so well he can even de-rib a crappie filet with one.

Picked one up yesterday at WallyWorld before I had a chance to get back and read these posts..... Had to! Caught a mess of white bass and was having dinner at Kym's - she LOVES fresh fish - so figured I'd better do the filet thing! I don't know what brand it was (it's out in the truck) but it was yellow and green and had just the standard shaped blade rather than the "filet" shape - I just didb't know if it made any difference and I had never seen anyone use anything but the regular shape. Whatever, it worked fine - even for someone like me who NEVER keeps fish!

I too have used an electric knife (over 10 years now) but there comes a time when you have to use a standard filet knife and in this case, a 9 inch works the best. I use the electric for walleye, white bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, and an occassional bass and pike that is hooked too deep. What I am talking about is the use of a hand knife on the 20 to 30 pound salmon that we go for once a year.

Mal, I went over to EBay and saw a 9" filet knife by Rapala that ends in 13+ hours, it's at $15.95 now. It has a wooden handle and a leather sheath.. Says the knife is 14" from tip to end of the handle.. Item number on EBay is 724463009

Mal, here is a website that had both the soft handle and wooden 9" Rapala Filet Knife

I have not got one yet, but thanks to all of you; I have a number of places to check and get one for the right price. I really won't need it until next October. Going to put it on my Christmas list. I personally like the Rapala 9 inch knife and the one in Cabelas - the 9 inch Cold Steel. I like the wider type blade which means I don't need the flexibility. I have a sharpening machine that gets any knife razor sharp so the wider blade would allow more times to sharpen it and thus last me longer.

Hey Mal...

If you only need it for salmon, try a Forstner...

Sounds exactly like what you're looking for...
