Falcon Tray Question

What is the purpose of the plastic hanger that comes off the side of the tray? It comes out of the side of the latch and goes back in on the other side of the latch. I am wanting to cut this thing off but thought I would check before take a razor blade to it. It seems overkill just to have something to hang it at the store.

I googled the boxes, found this link. About 3/4 of the way down under "Durability", they talk about those hangers and suggest cutting them off. They even have a picture of them where the piece had broken when they used it as a handle.

I think that's mor for tackle store use and how they want to display them...I think.
