Hi

My 1993 Evinrude 48SPL Motor blew up on me last week. Took to a local shop and they said it needs a complete powerhead rebuild, whatever that involves. Total cost to get me back running - $930. Ouch, is this worth it or should I buy a new motor. This motor has all the controls, power trim, etc. The motor looks brand new inside and outside. Pretty low hours overall. I am leaning towards doing the rebuild cuz the motor is designed to fit with my boat and all the controls and such. Am I doing the right thing??

Look at the price of a new one including controls and the labor involved in rigging. That ought to answer your question for you. Remember though there's a lot more to a motor than the powerhead so it is a decision that needs to be well thought out. Another question is why did the powerhead go?
