After taking my boat out on labor day i noticed some faily deep scratches on the bottom of the hull . they are through the gel coat. Is this something I should worry about? What can been done to fix this? I am not sure if I did this on labor day or if they have been there for a while but I have only had the boat since May and am the first owner. Please help!!

If it is through the gel coat you should get it fixed before it gets into the fiberglass mat and starts to rot. It doesn't need to be pretty but needs to get sealed. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply. Any suggestions for how to do it myself? Any good shops around beaumont,tx that could fix it? The scratches are toward the back section of the keel (the center part of the hull if i used the term incorrectly). Would a keel guard help prevent this after i get it fixed?

Sure would, if the scratches are dead center on the keel and up far enough that a keel guard will cover it, then the fix doesn't need to be pretty just functional. Get some 5 ton, 2 part marine epoxy. Mix it well, let it sit until it gets workable and then fill the scratches. Use a piece of plastic shopping bag to cover it up and smooth it out. Once dried, the bag materila just peels right off. Then apply another coat if needed following the same steps. Once that one dries, sand the surface to match the contours of the hull. Doesn't need to be perfect remember, the keel guard will cover most. Then you install the keel guard. That I have heard is a little more difficult. I haven't done one myself. My tech says it is hard to manipulate and needs to be duct taped to hold until it sets up. Then your set. Good luck. But don't let water into that fiberglass or you'll never get it all out, and it will rot a soft spot into the hull which would be much more expensive to fix. Your current fix shold be under $200!
