Controller needs replacement

I have a 1995 Nitro 170-DC Tracker Rick Clunn edition - 16'-6" and the controller needs to be replaced. My local boat mechanic quoted a price of $550 for the part and another $300 plus for the install. That's a lot of money for such an old boat and I am wondering if anybody has ideas for how I can get the job done more inexpensively. Thanks for any advice you can give.
