Hit the woods Saturday morning and it was 17 degrees. No typo 17!!! NOTHING was moving. I froze my schmeckle off all weekend and never saw so much as a doe! Welcome to NY. Glad I got my boat winterized when I did. Hope some of you had a more productive weekend than I did. Saturday night found me thawing beside a roaring fire with a 12 pack of Coors light, some friends and a big bottle of brandy! LOL South is sounding better every winter!

Damn!

Hit the low 50's in Pittsburgh, I was fishing for sauger and walleye in the river. Water was a little muddy still, but we managed about a dozen between the two species. Sauger between 9 and 14 inches, walleye between 14 and 19. A good afternoon to be on the water.

We got some weather in the 60's. I managed to catch a few 2 pounders. The hunting weather is just getting started here.

I expected the rut to be in full swing. I found some off the beaten path runways, but no deer. But, I had the same thing last year. The ONLY deer I saw all season was the 9 pointer that is now above my mantle. That's OK by me, if it happens that way again.

Hit the lake Sunday. Early on in the high 30's-low 40's, warmed up to mid-50's. Boated 5 fish 3 dinks, 2 three pounders and one big boy that spit a Senko (that's a first!). Let the wind blow me up to a mature male Bald Eagle that was sitting in a tree, snapped a couple of shots and got on the trolling motor to move away. When I turned around to look at him he dropped out of the tree, spread his wings and came within 5 feet of me. We looked eye to eye as he flew by. Sent a major shiver up my back. Awsome bird!!

TOXIC

He was just flying down to investigate that "smell"....figured there musta been some carrion near by!! LOL

Only ever seen 2 of them Tox. One while I was in the boat on Lake Flower in Saranace Lake.....a town. (remeber the NY is geographically challenged thing. Then another while I was trout fishing in the Sacandaga River, it went right over my head. Never got a bite that day but it was worth it. Have seen lots of osprey and falcons and hawks, but only 2 eagles. Had a hawk almost take my hat off last year while in my tree stand. He must have thought that little motion he kept seeing in the tree was a squirrel, when I ducked, we both had the crap scared out of us and I amlost fell out! LOL

Yeah Right!!LOL I thought to myself the headline will read "Fisherman Attacked by Endangered Eagle"!! He came so close I actually ducked and said "DUDE!!" outloud when he went by. He looked at me like "You want a closeup....I'll give you a close-up!!" I swear, I thought for a second that he was going to land on either my shoulder or the boat. I thought it might have been one of those rehabilitated birds and was expecting a handout. I'm sure he would have been PO'ed when he found out all I had was PB&J.

I was on Lake George one day prefishing for a tourney. All the tourists feed the ducks. I had this drake mallard following me around, so like an idiot I tossed him one of my cookies from lunch. Well he wouldn't leave me along after that. I was cruising around with the TM and he must have gotten tired because all the sudden I hear this flapping of wings and then bang, there he is, sitting on the back deck waiting for more handouts. He stayed there a while too. Must have looked pretty funny, me and my pet fishing duck! Good thing my dog wasn't there or that duck would have been kibbles!

It was 18 degrees F this weekend both mornings when my son and I were turkey hunting. We had fresh snow both days and could not cut a turkey track either day after wearing my son out up and down the ridges. He was ready for his bunk by 8pm on Saturday (I was ready by 9pm)!! We did see alot of deer tracks and picked out a couple of spots for him for next weekend. We saw four does on Saturday. We cruised around at dusk on Saturday and saw 24 deer, including a 6 pointer and an 8 pointer - both were in areas that we don't hunt. The deer were on the move right at 16:30 hitting the fields. Sunday yielded two fleeing deer and alot of hiking.

I finally found the right combination of clothes to keep my 10 year old son warm on sub-freezing days. Here is a list in case you are taking your youngsters out this fall and don't want to buy the expensive clothes that will outgrow before next season:

-Columbia Bugabootoo Boots with Hot Foot(?) liners from Walmart - uses disposable heater packs. He needed boots for school anyways.

-Wickers long underwear from Sierra Trading Post - $8 per piece.

-Sweatshirt, Insulated jacket (green so he can wear it to school) followed by one of my old camo chamois shirts.

-Nylon insulated snow pants under OD green cargo pants. Snow pants keeps him warm and dry, cargo pants keeps it quiet.

-Knit hat and fleece neckwarmer.

-Gates mittens from Walmart - folds back to expose covered fingers for shooting and stays back with magnets (no velcro). The thumb can be exposed for safeties. There is also a zippered pouch for heater packs.

-Disposable heater packs from Walmart - 2-pack for 97 cents. Did not have to use any this weekend as my son was warm both days. I was suprised, because it was cold!

Forgot to add that I carry a camo poncho from Wally World for my son. The longer that he stays warm and dry, the longer we can hunt!

I was bow hunting about 10 years ago on a corner of a fence row. It was getting dark, a full moon, snow on the ground, and about 5-6 deer making their way toward the corner. I heard a whooshing sound behind me and wondered what the heck is that. An owl thought I was a fence post or something and tried to land on my head! Needless to say I spooked the deer, scared the crap out of the owl, and went home and changed my shorts.

We get lots of eagles here on the Missouri flyway. I've seen as many as 20 in one cottonwood tree. I perfer swan as there meat is somewhere between a wooping crane and a bald eagle

I got to see the Eagles up close in Canada last year. One that was GREAT to see was when he was hunting just behind our boat for a walleye that we released that didn't seem to be getting refreshed enough from the fight! This bald eagle first flew about 20 feet over the water and watched us as he checked out the fish. Then he sat up in a tree about 100 yards watching us for a while, when he felt we were far enough away from the floundering Walleye he did one more fly by at about 10 feet above the water then then came back for lunch. Here is a show of him just about to pick up the fish. It was my JamCam so it's not the best picture.
