Maine game warden goes through ice on Sebago
February 20, 2010 08:40 EST
WINDHAM, Maine (AP) -- A Maine state game warden riding an ATV went through the ice on Sebago Lake.
Authorities say Gary Allen was riding the ATV at about 3 p.m. Friday on an established trail. He was crossing a pressure ridge near Raymond Beach when the back wheels of the ATV began spinning and going through the ice, heading into the water.
Authorities say Allen was wearing a department "float coat," which protected him from the cold water. He was able to get out of the water by kicking his feet and sliding onto the ice, which was about 6 inches thick around the pressure ridge. The ATV sank in about 40 feet of water.
Ice fishermen came to Allen's aid, who warmed up and was determined to be fine.
There is a two day ice fishing derby being held there this weekend with two thousand expected to enter. That's what he was on the ice for yesterday.
TONIGHT.......
RAYMOND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Sebago Lake Rotary Club's Chevrolet Fishing Derby has been canceled, after several people, vehicles and ice shacks went through the ice.
The Maine Warden Service said that seven people had gone through the ice Saturday and that everyone should stay off Sebago Lake. No fish will be accepted for weigh-in on Sunday.
Warm weather has created a number of pressure ridges on the ice, causing unsafe conditions. No one has been seriously hurt, but several people have been examined for hypothermia.
According to Game Wardens, the ice on Sebago Lake is extremely unsafe. On Saturday, seven people were pulled from the water after falling though the ice. Several vehicles, including ATVs, snowmobiles, cars and trucks, also broke through the ice. Wardens say above-average temperatures are causing melting and ice thinning, not only on Sebago Lake, but on other waterways across the state.
