Which is better to fish from? We were having this debate at work and wanted some opinions.

Canoe has generally more storage and space than a Kayak. You also have some ability to move around in it. If fishing two from a canoe, you can actually gain some help in landing fish, and or just in general. Some expectation of staying dry.

Kayak, you have every expectation of being wet (at some time or another). You are very much 'down in the water' - some could consider this an advantage, others a disadvantage. Highly manueverable. The new Hobie Fishing Kayak (made famous by Hank Parker), is really slick looking. Now being carried by BPS (saw one yesterday), but they get TOO MUCH for it there ($1,500.00 or thereabouts).

If I was to choose between a canoe and a regular Kayak, I'd probably choose a canoe. Between a canoe and the new Hobie, the Hobie.

Depends... Canoe gives you more room for gear but is harder to handle in wind. Either boat can be designed with increased initial stability, at the expense of secondary stability, so that may not be an advantage for either one. I have a 14' Wenonah that is nice to fish from, but I've never tried to fish from a kayak so I can't compare the two. I guess it's like the tin or glass debate -- just find something you like and go for it...

Teri, I know this is of topic, but are there pictures of your kicker motor plate some where? I was wanting to do that for my boat, and wanted to see how you had it done. thanks

Uh-h-h-h..... Teri..... I'm not sure which side of the "debate" you're on..... But I'd like to know what there is to debate!

Canoe!

me!

I'm not on either side because I haven't fished out of either....yet. I wanted a canoe because I thought it would be nice to put a trolling motor on it if I wanted to but my friend who does most of the outdoor activities with me wanted a kayak so that's what I bought. I still haven't tried it out yet.

As far as the kick plate, I think there is still one picture in my library. Caution...I still haven't been able to get it to work effectively. I just received my order for a new bracket and I may have to have a thicker piece of aluminum put on the back.

Teri -

A few years back, when I was going to Canada, I had purchased a square-stern and a 2 1/2 hp outboard.....

Only used it on one trip. True, the outboard was nice in that we got across large lakes with ease; but it wasn't worth messing with the fuel jug and smell and noise.

Tried it once down on the Current River here in Missouri and found that canoes are built with shallow drafts for a reason. I'd no sooner engage the motor than I would be out of the deep section and into gravel with a busted prop pin.

Several times thought about getting one of those outrigger things for other canoes I've owned, but decided that hauling the battery around would just be too much of a hassle.

A good quality canoe is so very easy to paddle, it really does turn out to be more work in the long run to add any kind of motor than it's worth.

Well, that's my .02 at least!

me!

It doesn't matter which one as long as it is TIN! LOL

Lets see I know you can get canoes in tin, but you probably have to settle for glass/plastic if you want a kayak.

Here we go again....

My last canoe - a 16' Old Town Camper that weighed in at only about 60#, beached over one of my favorite trout holes on the Current River.

I fish from both, I have a 16 ft. wenonah canoe and an old town otter kayak. The otter I put rod holders on the sides so I could carry to altra lite poles. It's great for fishing those small twisting narrow streams. The wenonah on the other hand is better for those larger rivers and small lakes where no engines are allowed. If I had to chose one to fish from all the time it would be the canoe.
