I've got a 2003 PT 185. Every piece of literature over the past two or three years and the Tracker website list the beam as either 83 1/4" or 84". I'd like to know how they measure it, because I measure 77" right behind the seats (the apparent widest spot). To add to my confusion, I got out my Manufacturer's Statement of Origin and it says BEAM OVERALL: 77 inches.

What gives?

I measured at the outside of the gunnels and got 77". I like my boat and since I added a storage/deck extension between the rod lockers, it does have a nice front deck. I also got one of the few dual console 185's.

The nautical definition of beam is been "the breadth of a ship at the widest point."

Boating folks are traditionalists. That definition probably hasn't changed since before the Vikings sacked Iceland.

That 84" is at the very back...and yes..THEY CHEAT! But the rear deck is a little wider and also makes it a LOT more stable in turns. The turnout on the bottom was a definite good idea.

Lon Weekly...I have a question about your new 185. Is there wood still in the transom? Just kinda' curious as to what they added for strength to increase the HP to 115.

Thanks,

TEE

TEE - My guess is there is still wood in the transom. My thought on the increase to 115hp is due to the wider/heaver all-welded hull would also be stronger thus handling a heavier/faster OB. That's just a computer guy's guess!!!

There's no difference in width or the all welded feature from the 2002 to 2003 models..just graphics I think. There's not much weight difference either which makes me think more braces in the transom ?...hopefully Lon can chime in.

TEE

TEE - Not 2002 - 2003 but from 2001 - 2002/3. I was very surprised when the did NOT change the listed weight or HP when then went wide and all welded. My thought is they wanted a year of folks using them to see/test how they held up, then they could raise the HP rating.

Let's see if Lon or Craig/Someone at BPS/Tracker chime in.

Oh....I See! Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck! So I guess I'm the guinea pig?

TEE ;)

My 185 still is rated for 90 hp. It was one of the first 2003's (probably built in 2000-2001 :)actually built in July 2002).

Next time I'm at BPS...I'll check out that 185 they got on the floor and look....I'll let ya' know.

Yeah Lon mine's a 2002 but,picked the boat up in July 2001.

i think i read some literature a while back that they changed how the stringers connected together (interlocked ?) which added some strength. can't remember where i saw that, but i think it was in one of those tracker pamphlets i picked up at the boat show this year.

jd

I saw that too..they tied the floor stringer to the stringers that's welded up front. Suppossed to be stronger...that HAS to be it if they didn't remove the wood...Did they Dave?

TEE

thanx dave and shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....we don't to want wake the old grumpy glass guys. Next thing ya' know ...they'll actually want tin because they're begeinning to see how many of us they are...probably gettin' worried...:)))))))

TEE

Yeah, kinda like rats....ya see 2 above ground and you know there's a hundred hiding underground. LOL

Glass still rules!!

Great research James and Dave! I wonder if they did the same thing with the Stringers on the PC 175, I know they did NOT widen the hull on the PC though it is all-welded this year.

Tin Rules!!

I'm pretty sure they did it on both models Trep.

Hey Tox...did you see the guy that was on here about a year ago with his 911 that had "Crackin' Glass" painted on both sides...did that guy ever get his crackin' rig fixed from Nitro? That guy made a few people on this site a little PO'd...can't remember the name...
