Has anyone ever had a backwash problem with their 929? When coming to a stop, I am getting a wave of water that rolls over the top of my 225 OPTI Max. That's right, the top of the Motor. This occurs regardless of the speed I slow down. If I goose the motor it does prevent the wave from coming over the top, instead it hits about halfway up the motor cover. Motor height has been checked and is ok. I believe there is a weight issue (too heavy) for some reason with this boat. In addition, it seems nearly impossible to run this boat any less than 30 mph without falling off plane. However, top speed is great at 80+ mph. Is this normal? This boat is brand new and completely factory....standard prop and jackplate, etc. Any advice?

I have a 929 CDX and my top speed is around 72 that's with a GPS . are you using speedo to just speed because 80 plus seems a little unbelievable. As far as backwash I have none at all . a wave coming over the top of your motor not backwash that's a tidal wave there is something very wrong with that

Actually Tom, I have seen that on several boats. But it never seems to come in the boat. I think I noticed it once on yours last year as we set down, but the water never came in the boat. I have definately seen it on other brands. I don't THINK it does any harm, but check with Bob, he would probably know best. Just my .02 for what it's worth. In my little lake jumper, if I'm not super careful and slow down gradually, I get swamped EVERY time, and I mean a LOT! '89's have virtually no splashwell.

Eric... I have a 2000 882 and I had the same problem the first couple of times out.. you just need to get use to triming the motor out for your hole shot and stopping.

As far as top speeds go I know my 882 w/ efi 150 will top out at just under 70 with just me in the boat... the motor has to be trimmed out just right! Kraig

I too was alarmed at the wash over the cowling when I first noticed it. I never had a problem with it, and have noticed it on almost every 225 Opti I have seen, regardless of boat.

While decelerating negative trim should be applied.(OR) Trim down when coming to a stop. If this does not cure it, check the motor height with the factory rigging specs. Good luck!

I have tried various trim positions and motor still has a wave comming over it. Even my dealer pegged the speedo at 80 mph. I am more concerned that at lower speeds around 30 mph my boat wont stay on plane. At what speed does your boat fall off plane? My boat is now at the factory, we will see what they say.

A hydrofoil may help alleviate some of the problem, although I'm not sure I'd want to take that drastic a modification until I had exhausted all of my other options.

Something like the SE300 or Stingray would help you stay on plane at lower speeds and, with the negative trim, would force the stern of the boat to stay higher as you come off plane. The SE300 wouldn't take anything off the top-end either.

Reading everyone's posts, it seems like this is more of a problem with the outboard, or with weight distribution, and not with the design of the boat. One suggestion that hasn't been made is to re-distribute your gear to put more of the heavier stuff up front and see of that helps with low-speed planing and the backwash when coming off plane. I know that for top end speed, it's better to have the weight in back, but in your case it may be beneficial to transfer some of that weight up front.

If I had a boat that would do 80 mph I wouldnt care if water did come over the back. I have seen several boats that do this, a friend of mine has ran his for about 2years and it has not caused any problems for him that i know of.
