Hello, I'm new to this site, but I've been reading messages for several days. Can someone tell me what each of the following is?

A. The shothole

B. The jackplate

Thanks, Bill

The "hole shot" is the performance of a boat from a standing stopped position to a planed attitude after an application of full throttle. A jackplate is a metal appliance or bracket that is attached to the transom of a boat that allows the outboard motor to be attached to the bracket (depending on the design of the jackplate) from 4 to 10 inches back of the transom... The additional leverage helps the holeshot and overall performance of some (usually higher horsepower applications) to bass boats.

How was that for a non-techical foray into a technical subject... Bob B. HELP!!!!

I thought that "whole shot" was the way Canadians drank whiskey....

Eh, Pierre! :^)

Hole shot is the amount of time/distance it takes your boat to go from idle laying low in the water to pad or plane. Each hull is different, some boats look skyward, really drawing down on the stern which is dangerous as you can't see what's in front of you until you're on plane doing at least 30 or 40mph. Others, like the Avalanche "plow" their way out and quickly, allowing you to see the whole time. The jackplate helps in hole shot by placing the motor further back away from the transom, allowing the prop to get in "clean" water away from transom draft or turbulence. It also allows you to slide the motor up and down on the transom for different performance. Hope that helps. WOT means Wide Open Throttle. There are lots of little terms and abbreviations we use, don't be afraid to ask. It took me asking to know that SB meant spinnerbait. LOL

It takes Rob a while to catch on to a lot of things.....but we attribute most of it to "brain freeze"....it's seasonal!

Ahhh yes... A "shothole" is a safety vent for Toxic's Gas!

Oh boy, here we go! LOL Ya just knew it was coming before March! LOL

We wil refer the "what is a jacknut" question to two pwople... Mark Hoffman (MoFish) will provide engineering grade drawings and illustrations... Ken Neeley will tell you the "right" answer...LOL

Thanks for the education. Hole shot, not shothole. I have been fishing for some years with a 1982 12 ft Delwood powered by a 1957 5.5 HP Evinrude Fisherman, so I haven't had to worry too much about the hole shot or hydroplaning. But now I think it's time to upgrade, at least that's what I'm hearing from some of the younger members of my family.

Thanks again, Bill

Welcome Bill... Don't mind the young "ruffians" here...

Welcome Bill, don't think ya'd go wrong with either of those boats either, in my case I went with a Pro deep V 16, but really liked the PC and PT 175's when I was looking, again, welcome! egMike
