Several points in the sunglasses thread have me thinking about a different issue. Instead of eye protection, this one is about head protection.

How many of you carry or use helmets? If so, why and what type?

If you think its a bad idea, why?

I won't go into my reasons for posting this question because I'm more interested in hearing your thoughts than in sharing mine.

I thought about one. but I don't fish tournaments(YET) so I couldn't see spending the money. If it's so bad that I can't just hide my face in my rain suit. then I probaly wouldn't be out in it.

Now if I do start to fish tournaments. I wouldn't have a choice as to whether I was going out so I would probably buy one. I don't think I would like to wear a motorcycle helmet. They are too heavy for just boating. Plus I think they would restricked my periphreal(sp) vision. I don't think I would wear a helmet in a boat for crash protection. It would be more for warmth and face protection from feezing wind ,rain ,snow, sleet and the ever present Bugs.

I did find this site. They seem pretty cool. So if I do start Fishing tournaments. I might get one of these.

Used to have a partner who drove a VERY fast boat in ALL kinds of weather. We both wore snowmobile helmets just to improve visibility and to keep rain, snow, etc off of our faces. Recently read a thread on BFHP about this topic and a very good point was made about the safety aspects of these helmets. They are NOT designed for use in water and in the unlikely event of an ejection from the boat very bad things could happen to your head and neck. If I was gonna wear a helmet again, I would definitely purchase one designed for marine use (as seen above).

When I ran a 20-foot boat and did more tournament fishing I saw lots of guys with helmets. I preferred large single clear lens goggles. I could keep two pair in the boat, one for me and one for a partner. They would keep our eyes from watering our ears in the cold morning starts when it was too dark for sunglasses. Another advantage was keeping insects out of our eyes when running in the twilight hours of summer. At 60+ miles an hour the rain can really hurt any time of day or year so I wore the goggles then. I found that it was easier to store the goggles as opposed to helmets plus they remained in the boat to be used anytime.

my partner and i used them in a tourn a couple of years ago. weather was a high of 40 and very hard rain. we got some funny looks at the start, but at the end of the day a lot of other contestants wished they had done the same. we were snowmobilers. so we already had the helmets. i also waxed my face shield, and my partner(who was driving) noticed how clear my vision was compared to his. if the weather is going to be real bad i carry it. and i also have gotten in the habit of waxing all my lenses in case of rain. one last thing about polar lenses. i had them hanging around my neck 1 day on my way home from fishing in my truck. i got caught in a very hard rain and even with the wipers on high i couldn't see. so i tried the glasses. you wouldn't believe the the difference. they really cut the glare. thanks. stan
