Last weekend it was 17 when I hit the woods. It's been hovering around 60 all this weekend and right now it's 66!!! What's up with that? Has the deer all messed up. I found a spot that was TORE up, 7 or 8 fresh rubs on a row on the edge of a swamp with 2 fresh scrapes. Didn't see a thing Saturday night. So I made a mock scrape next to his. When I went back yesterday, he'd been there alright, he had a huge print right smack in the middle of my 12 hour scrap. Still didn't even see so much as a doe. OK, so what do you guys suggest? I'm ready to pull the tarp off the boat and go fishing!

Trade ya Rob - Sunday was great after the drisle stopped, was 70 yesterday. Heavy storms came thru last night, it's 60 now, only gonna be 55 for the high by tomorrow!

So do I need to winterize and store my boat? I mean the morning temp's will be in the 40's!!!

So from a hunting guide service is the warm weather good or bad for business??

Very bad. You're treking through the woods, everyone gets hot and sweaty. Usually warm weather this late means contrasting fronts which also means lots of wind. That throws the scents all over and the dog can't work properly. Game is spooky. Etc Etc. I like it in the mid 40's. This is way too warm. I was in a T-shirt yesterday on my way in to my watch and still broke into a sweat which you want to avoid. Any human scent is bad when after deer. PLUS it's supposed to be like this half the stinkin week. I bet the bass are biting.......hmmmm

Rob,

My son and experienced the same hot weather along with 25mph winds for his first Youth Hunt and I was not happy with the weather. Last weekend had the deer on the move at dusk after 2 snow storms came through southern VT. We did not see any deer in the woods this weekend, but saw new rubs and scrapes so we know they are there and active, probably at night. Next weekend is VT buck season opener so there will be more people in the woods getting the deer moving regardless of the weather. It's supposed to be in the 30s and 40s next weekend!! 30 degrees and a calm wind would be nice!! Good luck next week.

I have to go get another stand. Mine was stolen out of my shed. I can't stand being on the ground. You can't see deer until they're practically on top of you but what's worse is they CAN see you right away being on eye level. I'm going back for that buck. By the way he's tore everything up and in such a big area, he has to be a big boy! Plus this is a big property, 1,000+ acres. Small bucks don't even try to dominate. I'll get him. Still a lot of leaves on the birch and butternut trees! Maybe I'll take Jim and his cousin out there one morning. It's across the road from one of my bird covers. Get 3 of us pushing and we'll move him off the bed.

BTW, Buzz if you read this, the GPS worked awesome. Give me a call to coach me thru loading the NY info.

Same weather here in Iowa. Had a Lawyer and a fireman out Sat. It was almost seventy degrees. Didn't put the chest protectors on the dogs(too hot) and now both dogs have assorted holes in their chest from barb wire. Despite all we seen a lot of pheasants and a few quail. All birds were flighty. Ran or flushed where they were when the heard us coming. They did get some great photos of dogs on point and pheasants shot and some quail also. Both guys were very pleased as was I with the hunt for the conditions. Be nice for some snow but we hardly ever get any snow that last for more than a few days.

Deer here are in full rut and the highways have dead deer everywhere. A lot of the city streets have bucks and does running right out in traffic causing problems.

believe it or not

I believe it. I've heard of that in Long Island and NJ. We have much more land for them to roam up here so they don't get forced into residential areas as much. I've only seen 2 roadkills this year. Tons of fox and racoons though. Iowa is supposed to have some HUGE bucks out there. Ever seen any?

You just wouldn't believe it unless you were here. My stepnephew shot one Sat that was 12 point and over (way over)200 pounds. I would be worthy of mounting but he already has a bigger one on the wall. So does my brother, his best friend, my turkey hunting partner etc etc.

I don't like stand hunting because sitting still in the cold makes the metal in the knees hurt like hell. I just bought a 44 magnum pistol so may try to stalk and shoot one in the shotgun season which is legal in Iowa. Two years ago this coming Feb. I had to stop on I80 on my way home from work. Over a hundred deer were crossing the interstate and had traffic stopped both ways. People were handing out their windows taking pictures. This doesn't make them that much easier to hunt as one screw up and their gone. My brother Dan has had fifteen or twenty pass under his tree in a weekend.

I woule LOVE that. At least you have something to watch! Beats red squirrels!

Here's another one for you. ABout nine years ago I quail hunted on a farm by Tabor Ia. Dave Peterson's place. He had a large feedlot for fat cattle. I could only hunt the place with a fireman from Omaha.

Anyway one time I looked over at the feedlot and there was a little spike buck eating with the cattle. I asked Dave what's up. He said the deer showed up as a fawn and moved in with the cattle. The next year he was still there only with a nice little four point rack. Stopped hunting there so I don't know the end of the story. Dave, by the way, has the 10th all time Iowa buck.(shotgun)
