SHOULD or does? One of the guides got hit by another boat and put a small crack in the cowling. Her Yamaha cowling was like $1200.



Yep, they cost that much. I'm surprised some company hasn't come out with an aftermarket lock for cowlings. After all, they have locks for $400 props.
