I have the opportunity to purchase a 2001 NX 882 with a 150hp OptiMax upgrade. The person who bought it is scared of it and has less than 8 hrs on the whole boat. The boats has been on the water twice (Pine Flat/Hensley). He wants payoff (19,500) but will take 19,000 for it. I am thinking it is worth no more than 18,500. What does anyone else think?

In 6 months, you'll forget all about the price you paid.....

Either price feels "in reason" to me..... A $500 difference isn't all that much..... If you like the boat.....

me!

Decide if this is THE boat that you want. If it is, I agree with Scott. The $500.00 in the overall price/financing is almost nothing. If you are doing it because it's a good deal, then that's another thing.

Biggest question is the warranty on the motor. Does it have a transferrable extended warranty, and how long?

There are always some great deals out there on used boats if you are patient.

Best of luck.

Besides the question from the gang above here is one more to consider: What options/extra's does it have (electronics, single/dual console, upgraded electronics, on-board charger...)?

A new 882 w/150 Opit runs $24,054 +frieght, rigging and tax/tag. Granted a 2 year old boat is worth less out the door in resale then an exactly equipted new one due to model year depreciation. How long do you plan to keep the boat? If it's 1-3 years you want to look hard at resale value of a boat that is alreay 2 years old. if you are planning to keep it longer it's less of an issue.

I bought my 2000 882 in Nov. of 2001 w/ a EFI 150 for $14999, it was a repo! It looked New, Still had stickers on it.

I could get close to that now for it..... For a boat that new,Like the one your looking at, I would jump on it.....

Thanks for the replies....The boat is a dual console and I am not sure what the electronics are or of any upgrades he has had done to it. I am going to talk to him today, later this evening, to possibly buy it. From talking to the gentleman it appears he only upgraded the motor and no other upgrades were made. He mentioned the warranty on the motor was up in December of this year.

What are some suggestions I can do to make sure the motor runs well WITH OUT the ability to take it to the water? I know that sounded stupid and I realize that you can start it out of the water for a short period of time or attaching a water hose. But what would I be looking or hearing for? He stated the boat was taken to a Mercury authorized dealer and serviced with paper work to prove it runs fine.

Unless you have someone that can check it out for you (thanks again Trep), you need to get it on the water. No amount of paperwork should be good enough. If he won't go to the water, then I'd walk away. No, make that run.

If he is 'scared' to run/ride in the boat, he can stand on shore and watch.

Tex is right, you need to make sure it doesn't SINK! That could be everything from a poor fitting drain plug, to leaks in livewell/drain hoses and the list goes on. You'll want to check all electronics, livewells, run the boat at many different speeds, on plane/off...

As to the motor, someone better qualified will jump in but DO NOT start that motor AT ALL out of the water unless he has the muff's hooked up!

Thats good advice from everyone above. If he wont let you take it for a test then pass on it and tell him why. I would also have it checked out by a good mechanic no matter how good he says it is. They can also check and see how many hours are on the opti with the computer diags they have.

For sure never run the motor without cooling water for ANY period of time. It will ruin the water pump and could mess up the motor itself. I think hes asking too much for the boat also, it is two model years old and its used id think 16k or so would be about right.

i just looked up the value on nadaguides and the average retail on a stock boat is 14.5k with a 150 xr6. since it has the opti it would be worth a little more. i would offer him 16 and see what he says. He has only had the boat 2 years and id bet he hasent even paid off the interest on the loan yet, you shouldnt have to take on that extra money.
