Is it okay to use generic oil as long as it is labeled TC-W3? Walmart has their store brand about $1.00 per 16 oz bottle. Name brand stuff is more than twice as much! Just wondering what you all think!

I have tried there brand and noticed more smoke and a rough idle, went back to Quicksilver premium and problem went away.

I use only Mercury product in my Mercury motor as is always been my school of thought that to burn the Mfg. own oil in there own motor.. I don't know if it matters but I've always done that with the outboard motor, thanks..

I know people that run it and do OK. and I have heard of others that say they didn't like it.

Just remember that the oil is the life blood of the motor. Without it the motor will live a very short life.

If you feel it will be ok, try some, and if after you have used it you still feel it is ok. then go for it.

I use Amsoil synthetic in Mine. I feel it's is better in the long run then regular oils. But that is my opinion.

Most guys, including myself, figure with all of the money we spent for our engines, an extra buck or two for oil is worth it. Some argue that all oil is from the same producer only packaged differently. Some say the ingredients are inferior in the cheaper brand. Who really knows? I'm sure if it says TC-W3 then it is okay. The bottom line - if you need the extra buck savings to go fishing then use the less expensive oil. Your engine will not suffer and you'll be out fishing. What more could a man want?

If you run the Wal-Mart / Lubrimatic you'll be perfectly safe!

Biggest difference between it and those of the Motor Manufacturers is the label, the marketing and the perception of the user.

There's an old saying around marketing circles: "Perception is Reality."

That's not entirely true scott, the Generic oils seam to not completely burn, causing carbon buildup and loading up the engine..... thats the biggest reason you see people thinking they have a gear case leak is the oil they burn.

Chris -

First you say that generic oils don't burn completely; then you say you say that this causes carbon build-up. Carbon is the result of burning.

Which is it?

I only use Quicksilver Premium Plus in my Mercury. Last year, my father decided to save some money and bought some generic oil at Wal-mart to use in his Merc. He had been using Quicksilver without any problems. As soon as he started using the generic stuff, his motor started running like crap and unburned fuel/oil was coming out of the exhaust. I convinced him to go back to the Quicksilver and everything is fine and dandy.

Thanks all! Not everyone agrees, but there is enough sentiment in favor of the "factory" oils I think that is the way I will go just in case. Walmart has Quicksilver right next to the cheap stuff!

I'm not sure which oil is best, but I use Klotz Synthetic outboard oil. I have a 2000 Mercury 90hp that I use it in. I like this oil because I troll with this engine and this oil produces the least amout of smoke out of all other oils I have tried. I have also noticed every year when I change my spark plugs they have no carbon build-up on them and if I shine a flashlight in the spark plug hole the top of the piston is carbon free. I don't know if this equals better engine protection, but it does burn clean. The Klotz oil is very pricey at $30.00 a gallon, but it gives me piece of mind. Also without getting into the synthetic oils I have found Mercury oil to burn very clean. It's up to you, but just remember engines are very expensive and it's worth spending a few extra dollor on a good oil....

i was reading a consumer report a couple of years ago. this article was not written by any of the oils it tested. when this article was written OMC injection oil was supposed to be the best.i run mercs and i use it. i believe this article was in bassmaster magazine.it also said if you use a different oil make sure it has tcw3.thanks stan.

Didn't we go through this like 2 times before? If I recall, we reached the same results then too! Use what you like, but don't get upset if it blows your powerhead. I can definately relate to what Scott is saying, I'm in marketing, but I have seen the difference first hand in my own outboards, and I use OMC premium! It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.
