1983 Nitro 170 TF Shift Cable Problem

To replace the shift cable. Looks easy from the motor. When I took apart the shifter I had a problem. The handle is outside and everything I need to get to is in the hull. I f I disconnect at the motor will that allow me to pull the shifter through the control panel opening? Thanks

welcome to TransomTalk. Posting pictures helps us visualize what you're getting into. You have to be very careful with the shift/throttle controls are some have pins/buttons for retention of the handle that can be easily broken when trying to remove them. Without seeing a picture of your control/shifter, we can't advise what you should do other than take it to a mechanic and let them do it. It sometimes isn't as easy as it appears. But if you have an OEM Repair Manual, it makes the job easier. I also know there's a separate manual for the shifter/throttle controls, covers a wide range of the various types.
